cville's first city council meeting of 2018 is tomorrow night. it'll be the first meeting for @NikuyahWalkerCC & heather hill as councilors. it will also be a departure from the typical process of electing a mayor.
cville has a city manager style of government, making mayor a largely symbolic title. the mayor is a member of council & is elected by the council. in the past, that discussion takes place in a closed meeting. tomorrow night, we'll see that vote take place AFTER public comment.
we can't make them listen, but they will at least HEAR US when we demand they elect @NikuyahWalkerCC as mayor of charlottesville. she earned more votes than any candidate not just in THIS election, but in any city council election in the city's history. that's a goddamn MANDATE.
unlike mayor mikey, who came in third place when he was elected two years ago, nikuyah has the support & trust of the people of charlottesville. the role of mayor may come with little power under the law, but symbolic power shouldn't be underestimated. she represents us.
signer says he won't seek a 2nd term as mayor to honor a "tradition" of 1-term mayors (last 3 mayors were not). in reality, council stripped him of what little power a mayor might've wielded months ago. not only should he not hold the gavel, he shouldn't be allowed on the dais.
galvin is the logical successor to signer. they vote in lockstep, closely following any instructions given to them by the developers they so eagerly serve. with signer out of that seat, dewberry needs to get galvin into it. a people's mayor would jeopardize his hotel scam.
we can't afford another mayor like mike. we can't afford a mayor who voted, repeatedly, to keep the statues that became a lightning rod, drawing death and disorder to our city. bring a sign, bring your voice. i think i have a few nikuyah buttons left. ❤️💚🖤
