1/ Remember last month’s Daily Mail headline ‘Another Human Rights Fiasco!’? The one lots of people were saying was based on a series of false claims? Well, today the Daily Mail have printed a fulsome correction. Please share this thread to get the facts out
2/ In summary there were two key claims that were false. First, that the claimant was a ‘suspected Iraqi insurgent’. In fact, the court found that the claims against him were ‘pure fiction’ and had been manufactured to strengthen the case against him
3/ Second, that he was awarded £33k for being kept in custody too long. In fact, £30k of that was for being beaten by soldiers and being inhumanly treated.

You can read my more detailed thoughts on this in my thread from last month
4/ And you can also read their first apology about this case from December here. Basically the article was so bad that IPSO appear, exceptionally, to have required two separate apologies. HT to @leighday for today’s
5/ The usual point applies here. This isn’t a ‘win’ against the Daily Mail or for human rights. The fact is the vast majority of people will remember the screaming ‘HUMAN RIGHTS FIASCO’ headline on page and not the wordy and detail-focussed correction on page who-cares
6/ Please do read and share my more detailed thoughts in this thread 👇🏼about why corrections like this can feel good but won’t necessarily improve attitudes towards human rights
I would appreciate if people who read and find this thread useful subscribe to the @rights_info email updates so we can all be a bit more informed about human rights and correct misinformation! RightsInfo.org/subscribe
