/ A very good point. I’m getting a lot of (I assume) Lexit supporters on my TL arguing, in essence, that workers rights may be guaranteed by the EU but we should be more confident that left governments (in perpetuity?) will be able to ensure they are kept in place...
/ Which given the past 10 years of politics (where the left, and especially the left left) has had poor electoral success seems rather hopeful. The more likely scenario is that either now, or in a few years, a right govt will strip away protections to make UK ‘more competitive’
/ Particularly if, as many expect, the UK economy constricts post-Brexit meaning (1) workers will lose out anyway in pay and benefits, and (2) there will be more appetite for arguments for making the UK ‘more competitive’
/ The alternative - staying in the EU or at least the EEA - means we are not dependent on a future of permanent left wing parliaments to keep workers rights guaranteed by EU law in place, and also allow UK govts go beyond them if necessary (as they are a floor not a ceiling)
/ Or we can take the massive and unnecessary risk of leaving the EU.
