Yeah I've seen a few of these dust-ups. It's hard to navigate between acknowledging generational gaps while avoiding treading into ageism. I don't have answers.
I'll say this. I don't think it's ageism to ask people to own the mindset of their generation. In the same way we know it's not racism to ask white people to acknowledge everything that comes with Whiteness.
I've seen people make the leap to "you're saying I'm wrong cause I'm older!"

I agree with @anildash that some folks are making that leap because they're not actually listening.
You may not turn into your parents as you get older. But if you think you're not affected by the environment you grew up in, you're not being honest. If you assume your thinking won't become more rigid as you get older, you're not being honest.
If you assume you won't misunderstand young people in the same way your parents misunderstood you, that's how you end up perpatuating a cycle.
