This is not the strangest book I've ever seen, but it does have the strangest frontispiece I've ever seen. The subtitle alone does it.
just in case you missed it, "Scatalogic [sic] Rites of All Nations" (1891) is "Not for general perusal" - a label I had never seen before. Must have been one of those books you had to request from the librarian personally.
the chapter titles are hard to beat:
“Tolls of Flatulence Exacted of Prostitutes in France.”
“Consumption of Feces by the Mentally Insane.”
and this one:
unfortunately not much use for my research, but I do hope to find a way to use "excrementitious remedial agents" sometime soon
Sorry, one more thing about this amazing book - it has the most detailed index I've ever seen. This is just part of the entry for "flatulence". I hope whoever does my next index will see this:
