This is not the strangest book I've ever seen, but it does have the strangest frontispiece I've ever seen. The subtitle alone does it.
just in case you missed it, "Scatalogic [sic] Rites of All Nations" (1891) is "Not for general perusal" - a label I had never seen before. Must have been one of those books you had to request from the librarian personally.
the chapter titles are hard to beat:
“Tolls of Flatulence Exacted of Prostitutes in France.”
“Consumption of Feces by the Mentally Insane.”
and this one:
unfortunately not much use for my research, but I do hope to find a way to use "excrementitious remedial agents" sometime soon
Sorry, one more thing about this amazing book - it has the most detailed index I've ever seen. This is just part of the entry for "flatulence". I hope whoever does my next index will see this:

Short thread - I’ve seen a lot of pieces invoking the Cold War as an analogy, and many others rejecting the comparison. Neither position is very helpful by itself, because it hides a very important duality at the heart of the analogy. 1/7
There are two ways of thinking about the Cold War - as an international system and as a geopolitical rivalry. People who compare the Cold War to today often mean it in the second sense. But people who critique that comparison often mean it in the first sense. /2
Historical analogies do get mishandled all the time, but this policing of metaphors seems beside the point. If we’re talking about the international system, there's no comparison to the Cold War. Relatively rigid global bipolarity was a weird and historically unique condition. /3

A Russian publication just scooped an interview with one of the creators of Novichok - still living in Russia(!). A few translated bits. 1/X (h/t @ain92ru)

He directly contradicts Russian government claims that the country has never had any such nerve agent program. Says he made Novichok batches ranging from 20 grams to a few kgs. /2
He says several dozen people in Russia know the formula for Novichok. He also says there is no antidote, and that Skripal and his daughter will die. /3

If this is not an example of a quid pro quo, I do not know what is.
You DO NOT have to an explicit agreement or exchange of money for it to be an ethical breach.
In many cases, even the appearance of impropriety is enough.
Disappointing, to say the least.

1/ I finished @nntaleb's new #book Skin in the game, and here are my learnings, insights and notes.

Warning: this thread is going to be huge.
2/ Human systems are systems within systems, interacting in complex ways. No article / paper / logic can capture all interactions of such systems and their evolution over a non-trivial amount of time.

So fear one shot, large scale interventions (such as invasions, UBI, CRISPR)
3/ People with fuck you money should call out famous or powerful people when they are wrong

So I never told y'all what happened on the Beargrease between Grand Portage and Skyport checkpoints, a 60-mile stretch of mountainous trail over tribal land.
Grand Portage is the turn-around point for the race, and the 60-mile run to get there was one of the most mountainous I've ever done. Total elevation gain/loss for this race is equivalent to running from sea level to Everest base camp--twice.
So when we left Grand Portage in the early hours of the morning, after our mandatory 8-hour rest, I was prepared for some serious climbing, plus a good 8+ hours alone with the team.
