Oh for the love of - if anything, this is worse than (Sh)Itsu.

LOOK AT THIS. LOOK AT THIS.

I know we’re all yellow to you, @Tesco, but COME ON
So the creators of the Kung Fu Bowl have just tweeted me this, and I really, honestly, cannot tell if they are trolling me or not.
Okay, I will give you the benefit of the doubt.

Mixing up two different cultures to sell your product is racist.

Randomly naming said product after a martial art from one of those cultures is, at best, in poor taste.

You’re welcome. Cc @tesco

Am actually shaking with fury now.

I feel like I’m being gaslighted.

This is why I never used to speak up.
Okay, because this is coming up in my mentions, I’m going to try to explain why the Kung Fu Bowl is racist, while, for example, a haggis spring roll isn’t (thread)
There is a long and ugly history of white people failing to differentiate between non-white people through a lack of care and interest, so much so that it’s become a trope

tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.…
It’s sometimes played for awkward laughs on the screen, but it’s a real and damaging thing that happens repeatedly, even now.

Exhibit A comes from the @BBCNews just a couple of months ago

It’s got to the point that it’s common for non-white people to respond with sarcastic and frustrated variants of

“I guess we do all look the same”.
Even at my own workplace, I was repeatedly referred to by the name of the only other Asian there, and vice versa.

She left in September, so it no longer happens.

I guess I should be grateful.
By extension, as we all look the same, our cultures are assumed to be equally interchangeable

Because as any fule kno, we all wear funny hats and we all know Kung Fu and we all use chopsticks and we all mix up our Ls and Rs.
Now, as for your haggis spring rolls, I don’t think anyone is under any illusion that a haggis spring roll is Scottish or Chinese, or chicken tikka pizza is Italian or Indian.

There’s no history of mixing up those cultures or peoples.

It’s wacky innovation/fusion at best.
But stuff like this “Taste of Japan” display from @waitrose happens time and again.

And when we dare to call it out, we’re met with silence or a shrug or flat-out denial.

It’s 2018 - people can travel to the other side of the world either physically or via media.

This lack of basic research, this lack of basic care is both degrading and exhausting, and we face it every single day.
We are not the Yellow Peril or some exotic gestalt entity.

We are not the mysterious Other.

So please stop treating us like that and try to give a damn. (end)
