Just for comparison, Starbucks reported less than half the revenue of Disney ($22 billion) and has more employees (254,000 to Disney's 195,000) yet manages to give even part time employees decent health insurance. seekingalpha.com/article/412047…
There is absolutely no excuse for Disney (or WB!) or any of its subsidiaries to not pay people a living wage and provide them with comprehensive health insurance.
Comics creators working for decent sized publishers deserve to be paid real wages and treated like actual employees, with actual benefits. There is no excuse for this industry to be this far behind in the 21st century while these companies make billions on these characters.

Alterna has multiple platforms to publish whatever open letter they want, journalists are not under any obligation to help them spread that open letter, and to be frank, running these open letters does not add to your journalism, it detracts from it.
Your main job as a journalist is to report on the facts of a situation and help readers understand what is going on. Publishing passive aggressive, manipulative open letters from entities like Alterna adds to the confusion and helps legitimize their antics, don't indulge them.

- Some time before 2011, Alterna, in an effort to stave off bankruptcy, started shuffling the burden of print costs for their comics on to the creators
In 2011, Alterna launched an IndieGoGo for about a grand to help keep bankruptcy at bay and the campaign page explains their precarious financial situation at that time indiegogo.com/projects/help-…

more and more people are bringing up the Gilded Age lately so it's probably important to remember how laborers gained victories back then because it sure as fuck wasn't through polite protest: it was by absolutely, 100%, unquestionably wrecking symbols of wealth and capitalism
here's a general rundown of what kicked off the Gilded Age
1873- Cooke & Company investment bank collapses, triggers economic panic
1875- 238 Grant cabinet members and associates are indicted for fraud
1877- Congress declares Hayes president after massive voter fraud scandal
Then in 1877 you have the Railroad Strike, which was in response to B&O Railroads slashing wages. It went on for 45 days, brought the American economy to a stop and only ended because the federal government sent in troops to intervene because state troops refused to fire.

Math Highlights!
As of 2008, the last year there was complete data, there were ~120K full time police officers in the US.

FBI does not keep adequate stats on killings in the line of duty, but per academic & investigative sources, is probably ~1K people per year killed by police.
Using that number Victims / full time cops = 0.00833

Pretend the academics have their hair on fire, because so often we do & they're over-estimating by 100%. There are only 500 officer-caused fatalities per year.

I met Shyla last year in a meeting. Her father had dreamt of making her a doctor. But his dreams drowned in the sewer he had died in. This is her story. (ruralindiaonline.org/articles/my-mo…)
Ten years later, Shyla is almost close to realising her father’s dream. She is doing her nursing course, and she needs help. As a society that sent her father down the sewers, I think it is our responsibility to see that she becomes a nurse.
When I met her again last month, Shyla was exuding confidence. “I will soon be a nurse and if you need anything, call me over” she told me and i cant wait.
Shyla’s course fee for third year comes close to Rs 1 lakh. I already have someone pledging Rs 10,000.

Trump falsely claims that wages are “finally going up” for “the first time in many, many years.” Wages have been rising since 2014. The current pace, 2.6% in April, is lower than the pace in Obama’s last full month in office, 2.7%.

Met w/ Dream Defenders to protest for fair treatment of incarcerated individuals. Was my first time on the front lines. Empowering feeling to be apart of! ✊🏽 Although those in charge wouldn't open a dialogue, we made our voices heard
