South TN is an Industrial waste land, very few many notable industries south of Madurai till Kanyakumari, but Tuticorin district stands out, due to its port on the Palk Bay, that has access to Arabian sea without circumnavigating Lanka 1/n
It is the thermal energy capital of TN totaling 5GW of capacity, along the Tuticorin coast there are thermal power plants of NTPL, TANGEDGO and other private players. The ambitious Udangudi power project is also proposed in the same distritct 2/n
Other large industries in Tuticorin are Greenlands Urea unit (SPIC), Tuticorin Alkali Chemicals, Heavy water unit of DAE, Vedanta's Sterlite and a number of smaller Chemical,Paints industries. 3/n
SPIC and TAC got embroiled in management issues and after change in ownership have restarted operations. Sterlite ran into environment issues and finally settled by SC verdict. At the time it wants to invest further Poralis start protests. 4/n
