If the show you watch has commercials, it is funded by those advertisers. If no one is willing to buy the ad time, the show can’t continue. Advertisers literally make the shows go. This was more obvious before cable when TV was quite literally free. But it’s still the same model.
The companies that buy ads are also reliant. They rely on the consumer. If people don’t buy their product, they don’t have the revenue to pay their employees, make products, and yes...purchase commercial spots.
Now, at the most basic level, consumers only care whether the product they buy is good or not. And companies that buy ad spots only care whether they will be hitting a demographic that will increase sales. But there is a deeper relationship and we are seeing that exposed now.
