Researchers were tipped off when the algorithm not only did suspiciously well at converting maps to satellite images, but was able to reproduce features like trees & cars that weren't in the maps at all. The original map, left; the street map generated from the original, center; and the aerial map generated only from the street map. Note the presence of dots on both aerial maps not represented on the street map.

Like this one by @_joelsimon, who evolved new floorplans for an elementary school. It produced a cavelike warren of bubble-rooms because nobody had told it to do straight walls or windows. joelsimon.net/evo_floorplans… Left: Optimized for minimizing traffic flow bewteen classes and material usage. Right: Also optimized for minimizing fire escape paths.
And this ongoing thread by @sterlingcrispin whose robot dogs have learned to tap-dance, flop on the ground, do pushups, and even hack the simulation physics to glide - basically, anything but walk.

Network effects are powerful but too often seen as black-or-white: a company either has them or doesn't. In reality, they vary widely in types & strength. I compiled a list of 16 metrics to measure network effects, coauthored with my colleague @dcoolican:

Measuring network effects begins with the basic definition of a network effect: does your product become more valuable to its users as more people use it? Quantifying the additional value that user n+100 gets over the nth user is tricky, but not impossible.
Products have different types of network effects that mature differently over time. We cover how network effects manifest themselves in metrics related to acquisition, competitors, engagement, marketplace, and economics.

Thanks - yes, especially in a post last April on how Brexiters would have been much happier if they had lost: chrisgreybrexitblog.blogspot.com/2018/04/brexit…. Re-reading it I'm struck by another point in it, namely that very few on either side realised how galvanized remainers would be on losing. 1/3
And in particular I think Brexiters have been genuinely astonished by it, having imagined that a vote to leave would be the end, not the beginning. So Brexiters are having to defend a victory they didn't want against a backlash no-one expected. With the extra twist ... 2/3
... of being almost completely reliant on remainers to deliver it. If it's a popular revolution, as claimed, it's one that the vanquished, not the victors are charged to deliver. A very unusual political dynamic has resulted. 3/3

Identifiers are labels that we assign to things. Roads, cars, products, buildings, companies, diseases, species, books, academic papers, stars, planets, drugs and yes, people.
Identifiers exist everywhere. Every single application, website, service or game you've ever used rely on identifiers. Sometimes they're visible because they are printed on things as bar-codes or serial numbers. But most of the time they're invisible. So we take them for granted.

One thing I point out in the #LowerEd epilogue is that there is a political context to shifting legitimacy to corporate highered. The GOP isn't shy about it. It's their official policy platform. Of Liberty, Alec shows this nicely
It is the context that colleagues like @Lollardfish @ldburnett @reclaimUC have tirelessly researched, written about and archived: the culture wars never ended. They merely transformed and became more deeply ingrained in "legitimate" political discourse
