Survey of science podcasts find most are hosted by scientists, endure fewer than 25 episodes.

The number of science podcasts had grown exponentially since 2010.
Most release just a few episodes before going dormant. But a few endure for >300.
I sometimes day dream about having my own podcast. This survey is a big, statistical, wet blanket.
We knew this. Most science podcasts don't bring in any money.
But when they do make money, here is how. Mostly donations, then merchandise. Advertising is last.
Survey looked at more than 800 podcasts. Here they are by topic.
Myself, I listen to genetics podcasts. Current regular listen list: @mendelspod podcast and the @insitome podcast with @spwells and @razibkhan

My podcasts include some by journalists, and others by experts. The survey shows the vast majority of science podcasts are by scientists.
The guy who did the podcast survey is Louis McKenzie, he's a biophysicist. Here he is plotting podcast survival times like they were mice with cancer.

Everyone is condemning He Jiankui right now---everyone in China saying they knew nothing about the CRISPR baby project. Yet it is more likely that many, including in government did know.
JK He had started 7 biotech companies and had millions in research grants. That's the kind of person a lot of people will know. We also know in 2017 He widely advertised his interest in making a baby to US scientists and geneticists. Seems likely he did the same in China.

Toxoplasmosis can be dangerous in people with weakened immune systems, but in most people infections are asymptomatic, and aren’t even noticed. In fact, it is estimated that a third of the human population are chronically infected with Toxoplasma. 3/n

Here's another thing we #ladyscientists are supposed to solve from that paper - manuscripts with female last authors were significantly less likely to be accepted (50% versus 58%) when the reviewing panel was all-male.

Thread: A picture is worth a thousand words, and your brain needs billions of neurons to process it. Why do we need so many neurons? To find out, we recorded thousands of them in mouse visual cortex. Here’s some data, and a link to the paper:

2. One reason to have so many neurons may be that they each have different jobs:
Neuron A recognizes the pointedness of a fox’s ears,
Neuron B recognizes the color of the fox’s fur.
Neuron C recognizes a fox nose,
etc
3. When enough of these neurons activate, the brain as a whole can recognize a fox.
