One of the hardest parts of hiring any role is just dealing with the shear volume of applicants.

We're at over 300 applications for this Lead Product Designer role in just the last 4 days. Most roles here get over 1000 applications.
Every role is a tad different, but I've come up with a handful of qualities/standards I can quickly check against to make a fast decision. Here are the ones I use when hiring a product/UI designer.
* Good aesthetic/style – Yes, you actually have to be able to make things look good. Yes that's subjective. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
* Brevity – Being able to communicate well without writing a short novel is really important when working remotely.
* Substantial work history – You may have amazing style, but if you haven't actually worked on multiple things over the years, it's not going to be a good fit. I want someone who's been confronted w/ countless design problems and that only comes from actually design. A lot.
* Remote work experience – Not everyone works well remotely. I don't want to be the place where you find out it's not for you.
* Business knowledge – I usually find this exists with designers who've freelanced extensively or started their own business. Being able to relate on some level to the users they're designing for I find goes a long way.
* Data-heavy design experience – This is somewhat unique to us. I've seen a plethora of amazing portfolios of UI work, but we need people who've had very specific experience solving complex data problems.
Obviously there are gray areas and exceptions are made, but these are the main things I use to try to get through applications as efficiently as possible!
