Been working hard to level up my own copy chops lately
Taking aim at a few specific aspects of my game.
Something I wish I’d done sooner.
So, thought I’d share ‘em with y’all so you can benefit too.
Here we go:
Everyone says “stories sell.”
But what does that MEAN?
I think a lot of folks miss the point when they hear this...
(I know I did)
So here’s the trick:
Use your story to reveal a LESSON.
Don’t just drone on about your day.
Use what happened to you to TEACH something.
When you wrap your lessons inside stories and anecdotes, it’s like a direct download link for your audience.
So getting better at selling with stories ISN’T just about telling great stories…
It’s about the BRIDGE.
Story >> Lesson >> Your Product or Service
Bridge that lesson to what you sell.
Once you train your mind start making these connections, you'll see that they're everywhere.
All you have to do is start paying attention to what goes on around you.
Using similes, analogies, and metaphors supercharges your persuasive power.
It’s similar to using a story…
‘Cause it boils your point down into a bite-size piece of info.
Something they can intuitively grasp -- without having to “think” about it.
“like a direct download link for your audience”
“mental digestive enzyme”
Now, I’m by no means a master at this.
But I’m getting better.
I’ve learned so much just from putting their emails under a microscope.
Recommend you do the same.
Learn to conjure the vividness of a Tolkien novel in a single phrase or sentence.
Best part is...
Imagery and wordplay are FUN.
They entertain. They make people laugh
And readers associate those emotions with YOU.
Which means more $$$ in your pocket.
This is one of the HARDEST parts of writing copy.
Being punchy.
Direct.
Straight to the point.
When I do, I always make progress...
My copy really leans out.
Reads better.
CONVERTS better.
Then, over time…
What was once lean and mean becomes bloated and bursting with dead weight.
The two punchiest guys I follow on twitter are @DennisDemori and @schm7dt.
Their tweets are punchy.
They hit HARD.
Follow them for a daily reminder to be punchy.
