It will be illegal to:

1. Force or coerce a person to undergo conversion therapy 2. Cause a child (under the 18) to undergo conversion therapy

3. Remove a child from the country to undergo conversion therapy elsewhere (i.e., conversion camps and programs)

#Bill207 is now back before committee. Dr. Ramona Coelho is speaking on behalf of UCP & defending conscience rights. What she fails to recognize is that doctors hold the power and must act in the patient's best interest, not their own - even if it makes them uncomfortable. Why is this doctor from Ontario speaking about a Bill that impacts Albertans? Context is different. Culture is different. Politics are clearly different.

Shakespeare once wrote that “Conscience is but a word cowards use, devised at first to keep the strong in awe.”

A doctors' conscience has little place in the delivery of modern medical care.

THREAD: So called "conscience rights" represent a blatant attack on human rights in Alberta. This is "Back of the Bus" legislation that would allow any health care professional to deny medical treatment based on gender, race, sexual orientation, gender identity. #ableg #abpoli Danielle Smith tried this in 2012 and it was a major factor in the election of Alison Redford and the ultimate demise of the Wild Rose Party. Clearly, the majority of Albertans opposed it then, just as they do now.

Modern conversion therapy is happening in many places in society, including in churches and schools with a "welcoming, but not affirming" approach to LGBTQ2 individuals. #LGBTQ2 This approach says, we welcome you into our faith or school, but membership is conditional on remaining silent, closeted, and invisible with a requirement to live "chaste or celibate" lives.

Suicide is the second leading cause of death among youth ages 10-24.
In 2017, 89 youth in Alberta under the age of twenty-five died by suicide.

If that’s true, why haven’t his actions changed now? Why is he against GSAs, which are proven to save the lives of vulnerable LGBTQ youth?

USA: Research indicates one quarter of 12-14 year olds who died by suicide were LGBT, which is very alarming.

Suicide disparity was shown to be greater for LGBT youth at younger ages.

What can we do to reduce risk?

These risk factors are often related to minority stress, which show how homophobia & transphobia create hostile environments.
