I've always found the concept of "soft power" interesting. You see it in the way Western culture (thanks to Hollywood) has influenced a lot of what is perceived as right or wrong in societies across the world.
Asian countries like South Korea and China are actively trying to replicate this: Cultivating their influence using everything from popular culture to economic favours.
On the other hand, minority groups seem more worried about "appropriation" of their cultures 🤡 ImageImage
This video explains the concept of soft power excellently, while highlighting how Hollywood helps shape the American narrative

So Chadwick Boseman passed from colon cancer at the age of 43.

I think this is an opportunity for Black healthcare providers to discuss the importance of knowing your family history of disease.

If he was 39 when he was diagnosed that means if he had children, they need to be
screened beginning at age 29 and any siblings he may have should also be screened if they have not been.

The general distrust Black people have for the institutions in this country is warranted. How as a Black healthcare provider do I plan to change this? I’m not sure yet, but
it is my hope that the mere act of seeing a Black doctor walk into their room to treat them will help. I CANNOT wait to champion and advocate for my future patients.

After 5 months of explaining my #COVID19 symptoms, coordinating w/ fellow WOC long-haulers in NYC/BOS, and ordering my own labs to rule out other ailments, my PCP confirmed that my symptoms since April align w/ ‘Post-Covid’.

Why? A @edyong209 article.

A #LongCovid thread. 1/18
My PCP is a well-respected, Harvard-trained practitioner who specializes in millennial women.

She was “unaware” until July that fit/healthy young women could exhibit long term COVID-19 symptoms despite articles from the Atlantic and NYT in May/June...or her patients. 2/18
When I originally displayed symptoms in early April in Boston, I tried to obtain a COVID-19 test but couldn’t until 4 days later.

They typical ideal testing window for when someone becomes symptomatic is 4-5 days. Hence, I already knew the likelihood of a false negative. 3/18

The symbolism in #BlackIsKing is filled with spirit and this is a long thread to dissect it.

As an Omo Awo (high priestess in training) of the Ifá + Orisha tradition, let me teach you something:
Let’s talk about the intro.

This voice over automatically made me think of the first odu (think a book) of Ifa called Eji Ogbe.

Eji Ogbe was the last out of 16 odus, the underdog but still thought he could be King too. He defied all harsh odds and rose up to become King of Ifa
Seeing this person painted in blue reminded me of Olokun, the actual orisha that rules over the ocean and larger bodies of water. Olokun is fluid in appearance and there’s stories of them showing up as a woman, man, or androgynous.

Image

Ms Tina has revealed that Beyoncé decided to make #BlackIsKing when she heard the story of Solomon Linda, the S. African composer of Lion Sleeps Tonight who received no credit from Disney. She decided to fix that injustice and show the beauty of Africa from the eyes of Africans.
The only song in Black Is King that was in The Lion King is this song, but instead of using Disney's "The Lion Sleeps Tonight", she uses Solomon's original "Mbube" and credits it as such, meaning that Solomon's children receive the royalties. I love Beyoncé so much 😭😭
Remember to watch Black Is King on Disney+ !!

So many takes on #BlackIsKing (esp continent vs diaspora--AGAIN!), but come on Black and African-descended folks: we need to give ourselves permission to contain multitudes.

We are so many different things at once. No one thing can be everything for everyone, nor should it try.
Though #BlackIsKing swings broadly, it still speaks to select sub-groups. It's okay that it doesn't speak for everyone, and that's to be expected. Last I checked, no one thing speaks for Asia or Europe or the Americas. One album can't embody one of the most populous 🌍 groups.
If anyone decides to take #BlackIsKing as the solo definition and epitome of Blackness/Africanness, that's a them problem. You be your own kind of Black/African. Tell your own story. Contain your multitudes.

Another weird critique Im seein in the #BlackIsKing convo is people having an issue with the prevalence of royalty. But BiK is based on the Lion King. Mufasa was the KING of Pride Rock, Sarabi was a QUEEN, & Simba was a runaway PRINCE who "just couldnt wait to be KING".
#BlackIsKing like whats not clickin for yall? Why would BiK not be about royalty when the movie it was based on is centered around royalty? There seems to be a misconception that BiK is a standalone movie but it is a companion film to the 2019 remake of TLK. Literally all of the
#BlackIsKing marketing called it a "reimagining of The Lion King" 👇🏾. Its in the official synopsis. It was in the trailers. Why do you think it was released on the Disney+ app of all apps 🤣. Not Netflix or Hulu or HBO but fucking Disney lol. This combined with people be confused Image

I love that Beyonce incorporated Mbube from the Evening Songbirds. Solomon Linda's family is going to eat! The story of this song and how Linda (who composed and wrote the song) was tricked into signing away his rights is heartbreaking. This is reparations #BlackIsKing
Solomon Linda was tricked to signing away his rights. They paid him by making him the cleaner and "tea boy". That story makes me mad. He died poor. Meanwhile record companies are making millions off his song #BlackIsKing
Solomon Linda's family lost out on something like 15 million USD worth of royalties. Now look at God! Beyonce will generate hype. Who knows how much they will get from this. From being tricked to sell the song to $2 to this moment! #BlackIsKing

I'm enjoying the cultural references in Already. I'm looking forward to seeing more from the entire #BlackIsKing film. I saw this & immediately thought of women in rural Eastern Cape. Also the horns on the hair remind of the Mursi women of Ethiopia. ImageImage
I think Bey heard fans and music writers who felt there wasn't enough sonic representation of all regions of the African continent so she may have used that feedback and incorporated all parts of Africa in the #BlackIsKing visuals. Hopefully we get a BIS film on this.
Another East African reprisentation in the form of the lip disc. This is a practice popular in places like Chad Ethiopia, Mozambique. The size of the lip disc can be symbolic of amount of cattle paid for bride price. Patterns on the disc are symbols of societal status. ImageImage

I’m an anthropology fan so imma talk about references I noticed in #BlackIsKing
The first I’ll point out is the priest on the shore during Bigger, with one wielding a thurible (chained incense burner). These are used in many traditional Christian churches, and are sated back to Second Temple Judaism. Image
The thurible and garb shown in the film bare strong resemblance to those used by priests of the Ethiopian Tewahedo Church, which is considered the second oldest pre-colonial Christian church in the world. ImageImage

I wish I had time to write about #BlackIsKing but August deadlines loom.

I want to say this tho:

It felt like a very specific offering. This was confirmed for me at the beginning. Bey says “you are welcome to come home to yourself” as they make offering to Olokun by the ocean.
When I heard Bey say this, I immediately thought of how she started #Lemonade. “I tried to make a home out of you.” For as much as we love Lemonade, it is a painful and *hard* story. Yes—the healing is glorious but the road there is a dark and painful.
Today, I sat and learned more about Olokun from a wise and gifted teacher. In Yoruba land, Olokun has dominion over the deepest parts of the seas—the darkness that is vast and full of boundless potential.

Just so we’re all on the same page, I’m not a Beyonce tea page... nor will i get any hopes up! Last year i worked very close to the project. As you all can see COVID-19 has had an impact and BLM movement has become very prominent! Beyonce is very passionate about BLM.
This project took waaaay longer than expected and evolved into something else. This is essentially B7. Respect this work of art as such! Other songs that were recorded and original plans for ‘solo’ Beyonce as you call it, has been put on hold to release music more meaningful.
As all fans want a tour to accompany an album that’s not likely at the moment. #blackisking started as JUST a visual for The Gift. The more she explored the more she learned, the more this visual piece became an art.
