Good article by @katerav about an important paper by @milankloewer et al. - but with a few blind spots.

First of all: the article talks about a 2.5% reduction in air traffic each year. That is not a small change! Because until now, air traffic has grown at >5% per year. And it wants to continue to do so after Covid - despite rising emissions and climate emergency.
What is important is that aviation cannot become climate-neutral through technology. All "alternatives" deliver too little and have disadvantages. See our new factsheets:

You really have to take a flight?* You are thinking about compensating the CO2 impact? But you don't want to legitimate the bluff (@GretaThunberg) offsetting is?

Stop worrying. There's a workaround.

Say the carbon calculator tells you to pay 50 euros to offset your emissions. Why not give this money to a group or NGO like @StayGroundedNet, which works on actual solutions for the climate impact of aviation or a group that in general addresses the causes of the climate crisis?
Giving money to small organisations, especially grassroots groups, can have a big impact. Sometimes, to do an action or campaign or not is a question of a few hundred euros.

So think twice: Do you want to contribute to a bigger change or perpetuate the old, dysfunctional system?

Marseille Provence Airport has been forced to revisit expansion plans, after the environment authority questioned how they fit with France’s climate targets.

Developers now need to demonstrate project's compatibility with France’s climate targets. Including plans "to offset emissions that could not be reduced or avoided."

Offsets are part of the green flying illusion. Compatibility with climate targets means no airport expansion.

1 Global warming is a systemic problem and should be addressed first and foremost on a systemic level. Oil companies, airlines, governments and a profit orientated financial and economic system are responsible for the destruction of our planet and for the injustice related to it.
