अधिक मास को अगले मास का नाम दिया जाता है, उदा. आश्विन मास से पूर्व आनेकाले अधिक मास को ‘आश्विन अधिक मास’ कहते हैं और उसके उपरांत आनेकाले मास को ‘शुद्ध आश्विन मास’ कहा जाता है । अधिक मास किसी बडे पर्व की भांति होता है ।
इसलिए इस मास में धार्मिक कृत्य किए जाते हैं और ‘अधिक मास महिमा’ ग्रंथ का वाचन किया जाता है । सूर्य एवं चंद्र का एक बार मिलाप होने के समय से लेकर अर्थात एक अमावास्या से लेकर पुनः इस प्रकार मिलाप होने तक अर्थात अगले मास की अमावास्या तक का समय ‘चांद्रमास’ होता है ।

पृथ्वीचा सूर्याभोवती परिभ्रमणाचा काळ ३६५ दिवस ५ तास ४८ मिनिटे आणि साडे ४७ सेकंद एवढा आहे. या काळात इंग्रजी कॅलेंडरचे बारा महिने पूर्ण होतात. (इंग्रजी कॅलेंडर पृथ्वीच्या सूर्याभोवती फिरण्यावर आधारित आहे.)

भारतीय पंचांग चंद्रमास प्रमाणे चालते. चंद्राच्या पृथ्वीभोवती फिरण्यावर आधारलेले १२ चांद्र मास मात्र ३५४ दिवसांत पूर्ण होतात. महाराष्ट्र, गुजरात, आंध्र प्रदेश आणि कर्नाटकातील चांद्र मास हे अमावस्येला संपणारे असतात. (इतर राज्यांत पौर्णिमेला)

चंद्राचा अमावस्या ते अमावस्या असा परिभ्रमण काळ २९.५३०५९ दिवस आहे. असे १२ महिने झाले की ३५४.३६ दिवस होतात. सौरवर्ष हे अर्थातच ३६५.२५ दिवसाचे असते. ह्यातून १२ चांद्रमास वजा केल्यास १०.८९ दिवसाचा फरक येतो. त्यामुळे दर ३ वर्षांनी ३२.६७ दिवसांचा फरक पडतो.
