Fascinating speech by @michaelgove:
gov.uk/government/pub… at the US #DitchleyFoundation: americanditchley.org/index.htm this evening.

(Ditchley's list of Governors: ditchley.com/people/governo… makes it quite clear all references to "#elites" in his speech are with a nod and a wink...)

No sackcloth and ashes, nor any real acceptance of #responsibility by the (now) Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, despite a pretty accurate description 👇 of what's happened - in large part - during his time in Government...

A grand, arguably grandiose, framing that feints at (but ultimately falls short of promising) a new #NewDeal, on #FDR's #Democratic model.

Themes we've heard time and again: locating the business of Gov't outside the Westminster/Whitehall #bubble; #reform (24 references) and...

.."#transformation"; "#innovation" & "#experimentation", with a passing nod to #risk & "#incentives"; and, of course, #ClassicDom's British 'DARPA'.

But look again more closely.

Fine words on "opening up" Government data mean little while #transparency and #accountability...

..are going backwards*.

If the Gov't & @10DowningStreet want #trust, they'll have to do a LOT better, and FAST. We don't want to have to keep #suing for information that should be published!

And note carefully whose data they REALLY want: it's yours!

Your & your family's #health data - "suitably #anonymised", he says.

(As have so many others; ignoring the inconvenient truth that it's only richly-detailed, linked, identifiable #PersonalData that's of any real value)

Forgive my cynicism. There are words, even aspirations, in this speech I could agree with.

But they are fatally undermined by knowledge of the now rapidly unfolding agenda that - to those paying close attention - is shaping up far less like a '#NewDeal' & more like a #firesale.

And here's a timely reminder:
