I put this thread up Friday. Few RTs because #disability ♿ and #poverty are boring to people who aren't living it.

That's a real problem in America.

Yet my mentions were full of people facing the same struggle --the fear, frustration and isolation.

The failure to prioritize sick & #disabled people in America is an actual catastrophe for millions. We already know nearly all of America's #homeless suffer from some #disability.

Also, 81M disabled & 131M chronically ill Americans struggle financially due to medical costs.
When the #GOPTaxScam eviscerated the #ACA mandate, it jacked up the premiums for every sick person in America. Mine went from $239 a month for my HMO to $1,978.10.

The CBO said it would happen and it did. Millions have dropped their health insurance because of these price hikes.

This has been the most frustrating day.
I have been working since I was 14.
I am now trying to apply for #disability--#SSDI.
It's a ridiculously arduous process meant to trip people up and keep desperate/sick/#disabled people from accessing help.

We must do better.
Since the #GOPTaxScam, my health insurance premium costs $1,978.10 PER MONTH for an HMO.
The cost of being sick in America.

That is just my premium--not the co-pays, not the cost of oxygen, hospital bed, Rxs.

I'm already bankrupt and soon The Wife will be as well.
My health insurance premium costs $24k a year.
That's more than I make as a writer.
How is this acceptable, America?
If I didn't have a partner, I would be on the street, paralyzed and sick.
Is this what we want for our most vulnerable people?

You are a middle class American who got hosed by the #GOPTaxScam after you were told that you would get a $4,000 tax break!
How did this happen? Well the GOP did it deliberately.
Stick with me through this long thread and let’s break down what they did.
1/ First, how do taxes work? Your big concern is not how much money you make, it is your TAXABLE income.
That is the important number.
All that matters is that.
If your TAXABLE income is higher, then you pay more taxes.
2/ Your TAXABLE income is what is left after deductions and exemptions are subtracted.
So the #GOPTaxScam removed the exemptions and many of the deductions the middle class normally used to reduce that number.

Since he brought up the economy, remember this:

🚫 He and Republicans forced a $1.3 trillion #GOPTaxScam that rewarded Sheldon Adelson with $670,000.000.00.

🚫 He shut down the government costing our economy $11,000,000,000.00.

FACT: the #GOPTaxScam has not come close to creating the jobs Trump promised. If anything, companies have been laying off workers while setting a record $1 trillion in stock buybacks. No one is fooled here. #SOTU
When he says that the economy is 'booming', remember that Trump and Republicans sold out Medicare, Medicaid and middle class families to wealthy people & corporations by giving them $1.3 trillion in un-paid for tax cuts. #SOTU

“Break decades of political stalemate.” That’s rich. Trump held the entire country hostage over a temper tantrum over his vanity wall. There was a bipartisan plan. He threw it aside. That decision was HIS, nobody else’s. #SOTU
#SOTU Fact ✅: Not phenomenal employment numbers. During Trump’s first two years, the economy has added jobs at a SLOWER rate than during Obama’s last two years.
#SOTU Fact ✅: The #GOPTaxScam didn’t create jobs. It didn’t pay for itself. It didn’t give back to American workers. All it did was swell the deficit by TRILLIONS and give a pay-out to his buddies in Wall Street.

THREAD: Trump has no regard for truth, & no sense of honor. To prepare for his inevitable gaslighting, deflection & BS at the #SOTU, it’s important to remember all the lies & empty promises. (Graphics from @amprog.)

1. Remember how Trump didn’t have anything to do with Russia?
2. Trump said he was headed to Washington to drain the swamp. Instead, he had overseen the single most corrupt administration in American history.
3. It’s laughable in retrospect that people fell for Trump’s promises that he would help the middle and working class. Trump has always sought wealth and power, and the #GOPTaxScam was a dream come true for him, his friends and his family.

The net effect of the #GOPTaxScam were corporate stock buybacks, not worker pay increases. Trickle down doesn’t work, has never worked & will never work.

One alternative is incentivizing raising worker pay by taxing buybacks & dividends at a higher rate.…

This is a terrible idea. The estate tax is one of the most important measures we have to battle raging wealth inequality. We should expand it by raising the rate and applying it to more of the estate's value -- not continue taking a machete to it as Republicans have done. 1/
Unless you stand to inherit over $11 million, you won't need to pay the estate tax. When @SenJohnThune and @senatemajldr and their Republican accomplices support legislation to repeal it, the people they'll benefit are people inheriting more than $11. Million. Dollars. 2/
We should LOWER the threshold of estate's value subject to it. (It was $1M in 2002.) And we should RAISE the rate (it was 50% that year, it's now 40%). This would go further to cut into the corrosive concentration of wealth that fuels inequality and make our tax code fairer. 3/

1 year ago today, @realDonaldTrump & Republicans pulled a heist on the American people when they passed the #GOPTaxScam.

They said it would would help working families. Then they stole money from the middle class to help their billionaire donors instead.…
I don’t think a single working family in this country should pay more taxes so that big corporations & billionaires can pay less. But that’s what the #GOPTaxScam did – raising taxes on some middle class families & handing out $1.5 TRILLION in tax giveaways to the ultra wealthy.
In November, voters took the first step to hold Congress accountable for turning their backs on the American people. Now Congress can do more to help level the playing field, like passing the Accountable Capitalism Act & our plan to #EndCorruptionNow.

Ok, I've had some time to digest last night's ACA ruling. First thing to know: ACA is still the law of the land, and even the Trump admin says so. Open Enrollment runs until midnight. 1/
What does "ACA still law" mean in practical terms? Same thing it always has: Medicaid expansion, protections for pre-ex, $ help with premiums and good coverage thru marketplaces, limits on insurance co profits (M👏🏼L👏🏼R👏🏼), 26y.o.s, and SO MUCH more. 130M+ Americans benefit. 2/
So what's next? Case will be appealed to 5th Circuit by CA+other states defending ACA. What happens there? Some legal scholars think this case is absurd and TX et al will lose, and then the Supreme Court won't take it up. But... there's no guarantee. 3/

Within weeks of the Orlando nightclub shooting, Sen. Tom Udall (D-NM) participated in a sit-in at the House to demand votes on gun control legislation, saying, "We owe it to the LGBT community & all families harmed by gun violence to keep terror suspects from obtaining guns."
Since he was first elected to Congress in 1998, Sen. Udall has taken a leadership role on a wide array of environmental issues, receiving a lifetime score of 96% from the League of Conservation Voters.

Whoa! House Republicans dropped a secret tax bill overnight because they just #cantstopwontstop trying to blow up the deficit with tax cuts for their friends and the already-rich. There's a lot going on here but let's talk about some of it. 1/
First: what are Repubs really up to here? Remember, in their rush to jam the #GOPTaxScam through Congress they made a few big messes. Some were accidents and some were actual slights. But now industry lobbyists want them fixed and Rs want to make it happen. 2/
So they're making these "fixes" part of a bigger tax package, that includes other provisions they think sound agreeable on the surface -- but of course, there's more to the story, and they're mostly geared toward the rich too. 3/

Late last night, Republican House Ways and Means Committee Chairman @repkevinbrady introduced a new tax proposal that once again furthers the GOP agenda of putting the interests of the wealthy first.…
For generations, the @GOP has made it their priority to rig the economy in favor of the wealthy at the expense of working and middle-class Americans.
Last year, the @GOP lied about who the #GOPTaxScam would benefit.

A year later we know that the #GOPTaxScam was nothing but a MASSIVE tax giveaway to the wealthy and corporations.

This tax proposal is no different.

"Mandating" is doing a lot of work in Bragman's tweet, since the supermajority was put in place as part of outgoing House Speaker Paul Ryan's #GOPTaxScam but the "Liberal Case For Donald Trump" guy has always been a lying, sniveling entitled twerp.
I'm not asking you to fall in love with Dem House Leaders' proposal to roll back the supermajority rule on the top 20%. I'm saying Bragman and NYMag are not being honest about the supermajority tax rule.…
I also find it interesting the single payer/free college crowd has gone from claiming they can pay for all of their programs by taxing the rich to losing their minds about a rule that limits their ability to raise taxes on people that make less than $70,000 a year. 🤔

Control of House oversight is a huge win for Dems.

A check on abuse of power.
There will be real investigations into corruption, nepotism, and conspiracy.

There will be no 2nd #GOPTaxScam.
There will be no repeal of the #ACA.

Democracy was on the ballot.
Disappointed about Senate results?

We dared to hope the Senate was flippable, but the truth is it was a near impossible climb. Dems had to defend more seats than the GOP did, and held their own.

Sets up the next 2 elections, where Dems have a better chance. It’s a long game. /2
Still, as the media debates whether or not this was a wave, keep this in mind.

Dems won the popular vote in this election by 54% to the GOP 46%. That’s a bigger wave than the GOP’s in ‘95, ‘10, and ‘14. Bigger than the Dem’s ‘06. Only ‘08 was bigger.

That is a big wave!

🗳Want affordable health insurance, with preexisting conditions? No bankruptcy from medical bills?

Dems gave us Obamacare, with zero GOP votes. The GOP voted 70+ times to repeal. They cost insurance of 13 million by repealing the ind mndate. They promise to finish the job. /2
My story. I was a healthy 34 year old until one day I wasn’t. It was before Obamacare had taken effect.

I was insured with a low cost plan, the type the GOP champions as a replacement for Obamacare.

I was financially ruined.
It could happen to you. /3

Ok let’s be honest. @JayWebberNJ says the average NJ11th family will get a $6k tax refund. This is bogus math but let’s just assume it’s true- 6k is nice but it’s not life changing & it’s not worth selling my soul to the @GOP here are things that are way more important (thread)
I’d rather have the peace of mind of never again worrying about going to school or church or the movies or a dance club and being shot by an AR-15 than a $6000 tax return
