FOLLOW ALONG HERE: So here is the secret Pruitt meeting with Philip Anschutz, billionaire owner of The Oklahoman-biggest newspaper in the state. He's also oil, railroads, telecom, real estate and entertainment tycoon, with major business before the federal government. more....
(I reposted this after redacting the phone number that I should have removed from an earlier tweet)
Unfortunately for Anschutz, Pruitt's staff left his office address and the telephone number of a hunting lodge he owns. I did a reverse search on that phone number and found Eagles Nest Lodge. Owned by Anschutz. I asked for Mary. It was his executive assistant.
The document came out through a FOIA request. Again, via the Sierra Club. Two staff members are listed as participating in the event, Ryan Jackson, Pruitt's chief of staff, and Lincoln Ferguson, Pruitt former press secretary when he as AG. It is an internal sked. Not for public.
Told that Jackson did not actually participate in the meeting. But a senior aide at the agency helped set it up. Anschutz is certainly a known player to Pruitt. His oil and gas company joined Republican Attorney General Association in 2014, when Pruitt was still active in group
Also saw, he was a very big giver to mostly GOP causes, including to help elect Republicans to the United States Senate.
One of Pruitt's aides asked why they were there, at Anshutz's office. This is what he was told: "It’s a fundraising thing....This guy is loaded.” So EPA administrator, on a government funded trip, is visiting with a major GOP donor, his staff in tow.
I asked Anshutz's lawyer about this. He declined to comment. Asked EPA too. Here is the direct question, and the full response to this question from EPA. So this became a few paragraphs in our story.
Oh yea. Here is how the EPA described what Pruitt did that SAME morning. First is schedule EPA posts on the agency website. Second is schedule The NYT sued to get, supposed his detailed schedule. But obviously, SOMETHING IS MISSING. Like a meeting with a billionaire. Wonder why?
And here is the story that this sequence of events is featured in, with @LFFriedman @SteveEder @HirokoTabuchi nytimes.com/2018/06/15/us/…
