While having a work dinner tonight, the Secretary and her staff heard from a small group of protestors who share her concern with our current immigration laws that have created a crisis on our southern border.
.@SecNielsen encourages all - including this group - who want to see an immigration system that works, contributes to our economy, protects our security, & reflects our values reach out to Members & seek their support to close immigration loopholes that made our system a mess.
The Secretary has been working with Members of Congress for months in search of a solution and she will continue to do so this week.

Citizens of countries outside Central America, including countries in the Middle East, Africa, South Asia, and elsewhere are currently traveling through Mexico toward the U.S.
Stopping the caravan is not just about national security or preventing crime, it is also about national sovereignty and the rule of law. Those who seek to come to America must do so the right and legal way.

It’s unfortunate that @AmericanAir , @united, and @FlyFrontier no longer want to partner with the brave men and women of DHS to protect the traveling public, combat human trafficking, and to swiftly reunite unaccompanied illegal immigrant children with their families.
Despite being provided facts on this issue, these airlines clearly do not understand our immigration laws and the long-standing devastating loopholes that have caused the crisis at our southern border.
Buckling to a false media narrative only exacerbates the problems at our border and puts more children at risk from traffickers. We wish the airlines would instead choose to be part of the solution.

A beautiful woman who has sacrificed so much for this nation.

And yet I struggle to see how Jack or Bobby Kennedy would embrace immigration policies that didn’t insist on both compassion for illegals with a firm commitment to sending people home who broke our laws to get here.
Still, I understand the outrage. #Trump is giving illegals two choices:

1) Give up asylum claim, get your kids back, be deported immediately.

2) Claim asylum, stay jailed for 1+ yr, won’t see your kids.

The stop gap solution of putting these families on military bases is an appropriate step, one that Obama took as well.

Trump says he's going to be talking about people "PERMANENTLY separated from their loved ones" by illegal immigrants who killed their loved ones. He adds: "They're not separated for a day or two days. These are permanently separated."
Trump describes illegal immigrants - perhaps illegal-immigrant criminals, it was vague as usual - as "people that will continuously get into trouble and do bad things."

~total number of asylum seekers who were separated from their children as a result of being referred for prosecution;

Here are some real ideas to fix the #immigration system.

1. Get rid of the 3 and 10 year bars and replace with a fine.
2. Put more asylum officers near the border.
3. Create a market-based cap for employment-based immigration.
4. Create an entrepreneurial startup visa.
5. Create a path to a green card for E-2 investors. Include any children brought here before age 21.
6. Let's really make a 10 year law: provisional green cards.
7. Direct DHS to allow people to take the steps to correct their immigration status.
8. Penalties besides deportation.
9. Put money and resources into fraud detection.
10. Expand guest worker programs to allow people to go back and forth.
11. Invest in antigang resources.
12. Centralized U visa databases.
13. Tax incentives for microbusiness in high unemployment areas.
14. State biz incubators.
