A San Fran federal judge dismissed a lawsuit against big oil companies for climate change.

“[T]his order accepts the science behind global warming. So do both sides. But these dangers are worldwide.”

It’s not the judiciary’s role, Judge Alsup rules.

Prosecutors claim that indicted attorney Natalia Veselnitskaya fabricated supposed findings from a mutual legal assistance treaty. @PeteBrush dug up that Russian MLAT, and it's signed by "S.A. Karapetyan."

A top Russian prosecutor with that name died in a copter crash last year.
Just as prosecutors allege, the Russian MLAT clears itself and vilifies an "Investment Company" throughout, in particular, Bill Browder's Hermitage Capital.

It should be noted that figures connected to the Prevezon case, believed to be tied to Russian organized crime, have a habit of encountering misfortune.

After Magnitsky's death in a Moscow prison, his family's attorney survived a four-story fall from his Moscow apartment.

In which attorneys for an accused Russian troll farm - an actual fake news operation founded by a man nicknamed "Putin's chef" - cry foul on reporters accurately quoting a federal judge. ⬇️
(Note: Despite my ironic usage of the phrase "fake news" in relation to Concord Management, the more accurate phrase for the outfit would be disinformation mill, as "fake news" is a meaningless propaganda term.)
Meanwhile, rebuked by a Trump-appointed judge, Concord Management's defense team carries on with its legal strategy: trolling-so-hard.

🚨 MAJOR: Natalia Veselnitskaya, the Russian attorney in the June 2016 Trump Tower meeting, charged with obstruction of justice in the Prevezon case.

Manhattan U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Berman said she fabricated evidence.
Remember when Donald Trump, Jr. claimed that he "mostly talked about adoptions" with Veselnitskaya at the Trump Tower meeting?

That's Russia's response to sanctions over the death of Sergei Magnitsky, a key figure in the Prevezon case.

A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit against President Trump and his Trump International Hotel that claimed the hotel gets an unfair business advantage from its affiliation with the president.
Judge Richard Leon of the D.C. District Court wrote in a ruling Monday that plaintiff "failed to state a claim for unfair competition."

Leon said he cannot bar public figures, including Trump, from "taking equity in the companies they promote."

1/ Of course. These Facebook problems are misrepresented to look one-sided on ethics, with obvious answers. They are in fact nuanced and difficult. People WANT Facebook to invade their privacy.
2/ People have a lot of one-sided ethics, such as blaming oil companies for climate change rather than blaming car drivers. Oil companies don't cause climate change, they only provide the oil to YOU, it's YOU who burns it causing climate change.
3/ There was a recent UN IPCC report about the drastic action need to keep warming under 1.5 degrees. All the press stories talk about Republican deniers. In fact, it's YOU who denies it, the average voter is unwilling to tolerate the $4/gallon gasoline tax that would be needed.

On Monday, a federal court dismissed our lawsuit against the Justice Department to block enforcement of #FOSTA. (1/5) eff.org/deeplinks/2018…
The case was filed on behalf of two human rights organizations, a digital library, an activist for sex workers, and a certified massage therapist. The court did not reach the merits of any of the constitutional issues, but instead found the plaintiffs did not have standing. (2/5)
We’re disappointed & believe the decision is wrong. For example, the court failed to apply the standing principles that are usually applied in 1st Amendment cases in which the plaintiffs’ speech is chilled. The plaintiffs are considering their options for their next steps. (3/5)

Just returned from Bangkok, where nations made little progress towards finalising the Paris agreement on climate change that aims to limit global temperature rises over the next 80 years.

It was my first @UN #climate change rodeo and there were a few things I wasn't aware of
Under Paris, countries agreed to a fairly detailed set of promises to keep global temperature rises under 2C by 2100.

It was the first time all nations - both developed and developing economies - signed up to the same set of climate rules. But they weren't binding
Parties gave themselves in effect 3 years to come up with a text agreed by everyone, ratified, and translated into national law on a state-by-state basis. The idea is the accord isn't legally binding, but the rulebook it provides could be on a national level

My essay is only concerned with climate change-related damages in the US spurred, as I argue, by US actors like the oil majors. I could’ve written about Peruvian villagers suing a German energy giant & melting glaciers in the Andes, but that’s beyond the scope of my article.

Short thread.
1. I didn't realize how badly Trump has eviscerated access to federal #climate data, so I went and looked at the USGS site.
2. In December, there were 5,932 climate science items linked there (9 were just pictures). Today there are 416 and 292 are just pictures.
3. In December 2016, 320 of those items were links to #climate data. Today, 0 links to data. 5,271 were web links. Now, 0 web links.
