1. THREAD I wanna share with y'all what it's like as a Black scholar to try to point things out to white ppl. @prose4321 wrote a piece in the NYT today which incorrectly said the crisis of AIDS in America was over. @Blaqueer & tried to point some thing out.

It didn't go well.

2. Dr. @Blaqueer (a PhD who has also done important clinical work in the field) & I tried to point out how 1/2 Black gay men become HIV+. @Blaqueer pointed out methodological responses, quite kindly.

The response "fuck off."

3. Mind you. @Blaqueer is a Dr. & @prose4321 is a post doc...at the university where I am joining as a faculty member focusing on media coverage of LGBTQ issues and researching AIDS.

My intervention was not taken well, either.

4. I explained who I was (tho, to be honest, people working in HIV/AIDS *at the university where I've been hired* generally know who I am).

My offer to meet on campus was also not taken well.

5. At one point, @prose4321 suggested we'd know what the issue was for woud count when we were very published by the NYT.

I've bene writing for the NYT opinion page every now and again since 2009.

He also said he was "sorry"...for being white.

6. An eagle eyed @BiscuitRogers tipped this isn't 1st time @prose4321 has shown such disrespect to Black scholars. Recently, he asked "when does the push for diversity unfairly diminish the ideal of meritocracy?"

and of identity politics, why not call a spade a spade?

7/7. So there you have it.

This is why I try so often to steer clear of explaining shit to white gay men.

You try to explain how CRT & queer theory are necessary for AIDS & you find your professor ass with your BFF PhD @Blaqueer being told to "fuck off" by a white post doc.
