In these days at the end of June 22 years ago I began to formulate my internship mantra:

Remove unnecessary motion.

Anything you do must move you towards the goal of completion. You don't "read the patient's old medical record." You "write a summary of the patient's past medical history." Always active, never passive.
When you read a paper or an online summary, seek the answer you are looking for and nothing more, e.g. if you give steroids for alcoholic hepatitis, how long is the course?
When you find the answer, stop reading.
Or maybe it was:

Stop wasting valuable time doing stupid stuff.

For some reason today of all days as I was writing my notes I was suddenly irked...

I was writing “Acute Hypoxemic Respiratory Failure” and sufficient qualifying supportive verbiage and I considered the physicians who first tolerated being told what words to use in a patient’s note.
Surely they thought it was no big deal. Just standardize your words to help the people who pay you. Sounds so innocent. A minor request.

If you aren’t happy doctoring lately, it might be a mission problem.
In the US for-profit healthcare system, profit is certainly not the only mission.

It sometimes takes priority and taints the others often.
There are some places where you can practice where the profit mission is a less dominant priority.

I got some new clothes, so I felt it was time to clean out my closet, and it’s amazing how therapeutic this is. Picking up clothes I haven’t seen in a while, flooded with memories from that time, putting them in the donate bag, recognizing I’m in a different phase of my life now.
A lot of these were clothes I got years ago when I was with my abusive ex— I couldn’t wear anything he didn’t like without being belittled, all of my clothing choices considered his opinions. My new closet is just me. My choices.

The stories being shared under the #WalkAway hashtag are incredible. My path to #WalkAway began when I became a Dad 10 years ago and the reality hit that Democrats were supporting group think, socialism and victimhood while the GOP was becoming more inclusive and open to change.
When I was ready to #WalkAway from Democrats 9 years ago it began with thinking deeply about the country I want my kids to have when they grow up. I country where freedoms are protected, the constitution is the law of the land, borders are protected and security is vital.
I want a world for my kids where talking about self evident truths won’t be the basis for exclusion from polite society, where our identity is our soul and not our skin color, where your soul matters, where hard work is rewarded and not penalized. That’s why I had to #WalkAway.
