Justice Kennedy announced his retirement today — 132 days before this year’s election.
Reminder that 51 Senate Democrats voted to help confirm Justice Kennedy — a Reagan pick — in 1988, a presidential election year.

Twenty-eight years later, Senate GOP refused to consider Merrick Garland, citing new rule on election year votes.
Republicans are right that Biden and Schumer mused about blocking other party’s nominees.
