Why do I have locks on my doors?

Because I don’t want people I don’t know to enter my house uninvited, invade my personal space, and threaten my family.

Damn.

I guess you got me, xenophobes. Build the wall, or whatever.

But first, a thread...
I live in a small house.

A stranger attempting to enter my house is, geospatially speaking, a bit more jarring than a stranger trying to enter my country.

So, let’s make this argument a bit more analogous.
Suppose I live in an enormous house, say for example one that’s 3.797 million square miles.

And let’s supppse that I share this house with 300 million or so other people. And, collectively, we are trying to determine whether or not we should lock our door.
Some of us say that if we don’t lock our doors, sinister people will come in and threaten our lives.

I find this odd, since people in some rooms of our house kill people in other rooms every day.

Why assume people entering are any more of a threat than the ones already here?
Furthermore, most of us were born in this house. We didn’t do anything to earn it.

We inherited it from our parents, who inherited from their parents, etc. etc. all the way back to our ancestors who stole it from the previous residents and enslaved others to make renovations.
On top of this, we boast to everyone in the neighborhood that we’re the house of opportunity.

We say that anyone can come into our house and achieve greatness within its walls.

We call our house the neighborhood’s dream home.
We have a garden gnome in the front yard holding a sign that says, “Give me your...huddled masses yearning to breathe free.”

At the same time we post a sign on our front door that says, “No soliciting!”
So, in this scenario, y’all are asking me if we need locks on the doors?

Um, no. No, we don’t.

All we need are rules for the house

(And keeping people out of the house doesn’t count).
If our neighbors will treat other people in our house with respect, then they have just as much right to be here as we do.

We are living on stolen land; the very least we can do is be “generous” in deciding who can live on it with us.
