X : What do you mean by laissez faire capitalism?
Me : There are lots of books on the subject, it's basically a view that most things should be organised through market competition. The really short definition however is ... wankers, lots of them, only giving a crap about money.
... if you really wish to pursue the subject, then realise that laissez faire is a view that the entire richness of the tapestry of life can be reduced to trading on a market. You may as well be replaced by a machine, at least it'll have more humanity.
I have nothing good to say on laissez faire other than we might be able to come up with a more evil & vicious system if we put our minds to it. The system is the antithesis of humanity, it is the market gone mad and commodification and subsequent commoditisation of life itself.

Me : Fire your direct reports and then fire yourself.

Me : No, I'm serious. The problem is not your people, it's your leadership. It's crap. You're crap. You need to go for the good of the organisation. You won't nor will your direct reports and so this will just continue until the firm dies.
X : How do we make this better?
Me : Spend a small fortune on sending yourself and your reports on leadership courses and coaching in sunny locations.
X : Will it help?
Me : Yes. It'll get you out of the factory so that people on the floor can get on with what needs to happen.

The most popular option every time - backed on average by just over a quarter - has been to leave without a deal at all - bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politi… ... well, I'd prefer GE followed by Corbyn + Brexit (preferably WTO but EEA docked to EFTA is fine) but that's a bit specialised.
... what I do find amazing is that "no deal" still tops the options after years of continuous campaigning both online and offline to overturn the referendum against no effective opposition. That is fairly spectacular, almost unprecedented.
But as always, do remember these are polls and not reality. Lest we forget 23/Jun/16 ...
Populus had Remain 10% ahead

YouGov had Remain 4%+
Ipsos Mori had Remain 4%+
... One of the few dissenting voices was Opinium, who produced that recent poll.

Since I've never seen anyone else talk about this in much detail, I'm gonna write an overly long thread about how the term "progressive" has morphed into something essentially meaningless, compared to what it was in the recent past.
According to this Politico article, the delightfully aggressive incoming co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, Rep. Pramila Jayapal, is of the same mind as I am on this semantic question (although the article itself is non-committal). politico.com/story/2018/12/…
So. Back in the mid-2000s liberal/lefty/anti-Bush blogosphere (Daily Kos, Crooks and Liars, Firedoglake, etc.), aka the "netroots," there was a distinction made between "liberals" and "progressives."

I want to throw out a couple of thoughts I have about the mis-use of the term 'progressive' as a euphemism for 'liberal'. I've addressed this in public talks before but never put them to written media and would like feedback.
During the run up to the Iraq war and later, during #Occupy, I always considered myself a liberal, since that was the derisive term used by Rush, Hannity and others that I fundamentally disagreed with. It was a label I wore with pride.
I'm not sure exactly when "progressive" entered my lexicon - it was probably during the @BernieSanders campaign, and it seemed like every "liberal" politician was using the word to describe their positions.

1/12 Neoliberalism is an absolute misnomer. Laissez-faire, French for “Let (people) do (as they choose).” Describes a system or point of view that opposes regulation or interference by the government in economic affairs.
2/12 What we have instead is corporatism, and it kills the SME sector. Corporatism favours monopoly. The Germans recognise this, so they have their own version of neoliberalism called 'Ordoliberalism' identifying the monopoly flaw in neoliberalism.
3/12 When we talk about monopoly, it is not just in the classic sense of single providers but when you have corporate interests supplying most good and or services. What it does is lowers the transaction cost to serve a market.

1) A lot of people don't understand how a third of the country can have gone from "normal" Republicans to part of a Trump cult of personality. It's actually pretty simple...
2) A big part of it is that Trump is an overt racist and sexist who talks at a fourth grade level, so that makes a lot of older conservative dudes jump with joy that "someone like them" is in charge. But it's much deeper than that.
3) The Republican base has been stoked with an endless stream of delusional paranoid fantasies for the last 30 years by a barrage of right-wing media, from chain emails to Fox News to talk radio to Drudge, Breitbart, and the rest.
