It's been 5 months since the #Parkland massacre. On the 14th of the month I've been tweeting each of the portraits I drew.
A star soccer player. A devoted friend. One of the youngest to die.
14 yrs old.
I'm still here. She's not. I remember. RIP

What a disgrace for our country that students are murdered in school.
Remembering Martin, 5 months after his death. #EnoughIsEnough #RoadToChange

Our country desperately needs #GunReformNow. It’s proven that states with stricter gun laws have far less death by firearm. Read this. We need to discuss what specifically needs to be done to reduce the death toll. #Enoughnytimes.com/interactive/20…
For the record, I do not think we need to ban all guns, or repeal 2A. We can pass effective and sensible #GunReform without being extreme.
But it is clear that more firearm laws equals less death by firearms. Those of us that are advocating for #GunReform need to get on the same page, be sending the same message. So let’s come up with some aspects that we can all agree on. scientificamerican.com/article/more-g…
Statistically, mentally ill people are more likely to be victims of violence than commit violence. To reduce gun violence, we must address availability of #guns & complex cultural issues. We can't focus on the molehill when the mountain's right there. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P…
We also unfairly overburden psychiatric professionals by making them responsible & accountable for preventing gun crime. Gun violence still disproportionately harms communities of color, & our failure to invest in social and physical infrastructure perpetuates the cycle.
Our most common psychiatric diagnoses (depressive, anxiety, & attention-deficit disordres) have no correlation w/violence. While I agree w/having trained mental health professionals in schools, that won't stop gun violence. We must change our culture. #NeverAgain#GunReformNow
I want to throw out a couple of thoughts I have about the mis-use of the term 'progressive' as a euphemism for 'liberal'. I've addressed this in public talks before but never put them to written media and would like feedback.
During the run up to the Iraq war and later, during #Occupy, I always considered myself a liberal, since that was the derisive term used by Rush, Hannity and others that I fundamentally disagreed with. It was a label I wore with pride.
I'm not sure exactly when "progressive" entered my lexicon - it was probably during the @BernieSanders campaign, and it seemed like every "liberal" politician was using the word to describe their positions.
Tell La Senate Judiciary members Vote NO! Don't allow MORE guns at La schools! How do you regulate? When did they last get training? What if parent angry w/kid's classmate? NO NO NO! @DanClaitor@ReginaBarrow@TROYSEE@SenYvonne

.@PiattPatti's son died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
"Watching others lose a child and knowing what they feel brings it all back. I don't have a problem with responsible gun ownership, but there is nothing responsible about owning an AR-15." #MarchForOurLives #AMJoy #KY04
"If we want teachers to have to ability to make offensive measures, why not non-lethal weapons? It's terrible that we would have to, but if we do, that route should not be firearms." -@TomPrigg2018 #MarchForOurLives #AMJoy
Republican leaders have agreed to include a provision in the government funding package clarifying that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is not barred from conducting gun violence research under a 1996 amendment. But not repeal the so-called Dickey Amendment .
So it's a partial victory. The CDC needs a clear mandate to research specific factors that target #giunviolence prevention, appropriations, and a "timed report back to congress with findings" to see the change that is needed. #gunreform#Enough@meganranney
Another school shooting in the US today. It’s tragic, it’s horrible & escalating in our gun culture.
I💚Math. An int’l language, it makes sense to me when the rest of the world doesn’t. Especially when it comes to numbers & statistics on guns in the US
The #NRA killed Brady Bill's provision buyers complete full background check before getting the gun. With NRAs "instant" background check system, if FBI can't complete review within 3 days, you get the gun!
2/ Understanding gun laws: "Gun show loophole"
Only licensed sellers have to run a background check. Per federal law, private sellers do not. Only 9 states and DC require background checks on private sales of all types of guns. #GunReformNow#MarchForOurLives
3/ Understanding gun laws: CAP Laws (Child Access Protection)
In 2015 & 2016, more toddlers killed Americans than terrorists. Kids accessed parents' guns & pulled the trigger, killing themselves or family. 21 states have no CAP laws to prosecute negligent parents.
I just wrote a letter to my congressmen using Democracy.io
It's interesting that the Democrat had the choice of using #GunControl for a topic.
For the two Republicans who pretend to represent me, I had to use #education as #GunReform wasn't an option.
1. My letter started with:
Even Justice Scalia agreed that the 2nd Amendment does not extend to military weapons in the hands of civilians. More guns in schools just means more shootings and more deaths.
2. I continued with:
For this reason, should it come to pass that guns will be put in schools, I will tender my resignation as a public school teacher in the state of Florida. A teacher in Parkland gave his life protecting his students. #WeChoose #NeverAgain
My thread for gun-ownership and -safety reform. Link to a comprehensive plan at the bottom...
Establish age, mental-health, and registration prerequisites to ownership: Set minimum ownership age to 21 for all weapons except shotguns, which can be purchased at 18. All owners must pass ATF-designed mental-health exam with a locally-designated physician prior to purchase.
For handgun ownership, this must be repeatedly yearly. All owners of handguns must register ownership annually and meet all prerequisites at the time of registration. All sellers must register as dealers annually.
The #NRA is a powerful functioning arms industry #lobby masquerading as a 501(c)4 #nonprofit membership organization, claiming to educate the public about the interests of its members. Here’s why we need to stop this lie and strip it of nonprofit status:
If you do the math, with 5 million members x $40 annual dues, the #NRA should have an annual budget of about $200 million dollars as a membership organization.
However, the NRA'S total budget was over $400 million in 2016 because more than half of its budget comes from individual and corporate contributions and selling advertising in publications and events.
Every School Shooting & their Casualties (THREAD):
US School Shooting #1}
The earliest known US school shooting - July 26, 1764
Present-Day Greencastle, PA
4 shooters entered a schoolhouse where they shot & killed the schoolmaster & killed 10 children. Only 2 kids survived.
US School Shootings #2)
Nov. 2, 1853 Louisville, KY
A student, Matthew Ward, bought a self-cocking pistol in the morning, went to school and killed Schoolmaster Mr. Butler in front of his classmates for excessively punishing his brother the day before.
USA School Shootings #3)
March 9, 1873 Salisbury, MD
After school, a teacher was walking with four small children. She was approached by a Mr. Hall and shot. The Schoolmaster ran out, but she was dead instantly. Hall threw himself in front of a train.
There are 30,000 gun related deaths per year by firearms, & this number is not disputed. U.S. population 324,059,091 as of Wednesday, June 22, 2016. Do the math: 0.000000925% of the pop dies from gun-related actions each year. #GunReformNow
Statistically speaking, this is insignificant! What is never told, however, is a breakdown of those 30,000 deaths, to put them in perspective as compared to other causes of death:
• 65% of those deaths are by suicide which would never be prevented by gun laws
• 15% are by law enforcement in the line of duty and justified
• 17% are through criminal activity, gang and drug-related or mentally ill persons– gun violence
• 3% are accidental discharge deaths
While we were watching the horror of the #ParklandShooting unfold, #AZLeg House Judiciary Comm's GOP members passed HB2535, @kevinpayneLD21's bill that'd PROHIBIT all child welfare agencies from adopting or enforcing any rule or policy related to possession or storage of a gun.
In the same breath, Rep. Payne declares that the AZ Department of Child Safety's "primary purpose is to protect children" and that DCS should not maintain the ability to protect children from firearms. These seem like ideas completely at odds w each other, no?
Because we know that, during the first six months of 2017, for example, minors died from accidental shootings at a pace of one every other day, with the majority of the shootings occurring in the home. usatoday.com/story/news/201…
