Inspired by the resonant chain of #TRAPPIST1 Planetary System and system-sounds.com/trappist-sound… we decided to create a physical model of Trappist-1’s Musical System: where the motion of planets would be controlled by the music they generate and would synchronize for a grand finale!
It required learning musical notes, coding of midi files, Reaper Software, programming Arduino, relays, LED lights: a very challenging project for our Maker Family.

So we had to do it!

It took us over 3 weeks to build this project.

A thing I am dealing with now is studying cancer in test tubes and watching my father fight cancer in real life.

Today I'd like to talk about jet streams, atmospheric turbulence, and climate change.

Why do we even have jet streams? At any fixed altitude, the north-south temperature difference between equator and pole causes the eastward wind to increase with height (wind shear).
You can check out the current positions and speeds of the jet streams interactively at earth.nullschool.net. (Change height to 250 hPa to move up to the altitudes where they typically blow the fastest.)
Jet streams move around from one day to the next and vary in strength. They play a crucial role in steering weather systems as well as aircraft (which enjoy the tailwinds on eastbound flights, but try to avoid the westbound headwinds).

Why does this climate change impact on phenology matter? Because it means that the regions TODAY that are best suited for the grape varieties planted there may not be the best in the coming decades
So what can we do about? Lots, it turns out.

A is for... the Apriori Algorithm!

Intended to mine frequent itemsets for Boolean association rules (like market basket analysis). Ex: if someone purchases the same products as you, in general, then you'd probably purchase something they've purchased.

B is for... Bootstrapped Aggregation (Bagging)!

This is an ensemble meta-algorithm designed to improve the stability and accuracy of machine learning algorithms used in statistical classification+regression. Reduces variance, helps to avoid overfitting.

Okay. So. It's time once again for me to do that thing I do: a deep dive into Trump's state of the union speech.
For new followers who've tuned in since the last time I did this, bear in mind I am not a factchecker. That's a different (though related) skill set and best done by people with the training, resources, and editorial oversight that I don't have.

Remember how TRAPPIST-1 shares much in common with Jupiter? There's more. Moons Io, Europa, Ganymede are locked in a 'resonant chain'.
For every orbit of Ganymede, Europa does 2 and Io does 4, so they keep ticking out a regular, repeating pattern.
