Good morning! Abortion is a safe medical procedure. Did you know that abortions performed in ambulatory surgical centers are not safer than those performed in clinics? There’s no medical reason for states to require clinics to become ASCs, or basically mini hospitals.
In fact, @SRofANSIRH & @UshmaU’s research found that 96.7% of patients in ASCs and in clinics had NO complications after their abortions. And only 0.3% of patients had a major complication after their abortion. Abortion is safe.

@SRofANSIRH @UshmaU Here’s the thing: 13 states currently require abortion clinics to meet the standards of Ambulatory Surgical Centers, which costs a lot of money to upgrade, and there’s no impact on patient outcomes, particularly because abortion is already safe. During the #KavanaughHearings, Kavanaugh referenced his dissent in a case on the contraception coverage requirement by employers for employees' healthcare. In his testimony, he referred to contraception as "abortion-inducing drugs". This is not medically accurate and is a tactic.
Medically and scientifically, pregnancy begins at implantation. Most contraception works by blocking an egg release or blocking or disabling sperm; sometimes they work to block implantation of a fertilized egg. No contraception works after implantation or causes an abortion.
Medication abortions, or surgical abortions, remove an existing pregnancy. Contraception works before a patient is pregnant. Contraception, Plan B, and IUDs do not cause abortions. There is a huge misinformation campaign to conflate how these things work to undermine access.

This is a moving story about unsafe abortion in 1968. The public health threat of overturning Roe v. Wade is great, but women will not suffer the physical harms to the same degree they did in the 1960s thanks to medical advancements. Unfortunately, criminalization is.
Self-managed abortion is rarely coat hangers and back alley abortions these days. In my research in Texas, patients are more likely to give themselves an abortion through medication abortion or herbs: liberalarts.utexas.edu/txpep/_files/p…
My research has found medication abortion is safe for patients to use on their own (journals.plos.org/plosone/articl…) or via telemedicine (reuters.com/article/us-hea…), however taking medication abortion on your own is criminalized in many states. This is dangerous for patients.

Hey @CDCgov, can we work on the framing here? Women, and all who can become pregnant, are not perpetually 'pre-pregnant’. Caring for their health is about more than their ability to become pregnant.
@CDCgov Yes, folate is important for a healthy pregnancy, but it may be irrelevant to those using effective contraception and/or would have an abortion if they became pregnant. There are many who “can” get pregnant, but don’t have sex with cisgender men and aren’t planning pregnancy.
@CDCgov Let’s move away from a strictly heteronormative, cisgender-focused framing of pregnancy, @CDCgov, and recognize that continuing a pregnancy is not always a desired outcome for everyone. We have to listen to our patients and their healthcare needs.

2/8 No warning, just suddenly died? Had sex, got a woman pregnant, she died because of a coathanger abortion, and dropped dead immediately?

Last night I promised a thread about #abortion before Roe v Wade legalized it nationally. Until the mid-1800s, common law allowed abortion until "quickening", when fetal movement can be felt. Toxic abortion remedies & doctors competing w midwives led to… 1/
laws outlawing abortion except where pregnancy was likely to be fatal spreading across the country. Bottled abortion remedies could be and were fatal, and doctors, almost all white and male, didn't want midwives competing with them for pregnancy care. 2/
