I support #MedicareForAll. It's why I supported @berniesanders. It's why I co-authored "Medicare for All: A Citizen's Guide" w/ @micah_johnson_.

And it's also why I agreed when Bernie asked me to join the Unity Task Force on healthcare.

A thread:

1/
Joe Biden isn't Bernie. He does not support #MedicareforAll—we deeply disagree on this.

But he does support universal coverage, expanding public coverage, reining in Pharma, & health equity—things we DO agree on.

Our Task Force recommendations build upon these aims.

2/
Our Task Force worked hard & I'm grateful to the team & Co-Chairs @PramilaJayapal & @vivek_murthy.

We didn't agree on everything, but we came to recommendations that will yield one of the most progressive Dem campaign platforms in history-tho we have further yet to go.

As a young researcher in the field of HIV and AIDS, I am uniquely positioned to bring attention to the recent season of the Netflix Original: 13 Reasons Why (originally based off of Jay Asher’s book 13 Reasons Why, 2007). @13ReasonsWhy
A THREAD:
Netflix released the first season of 13 Reasons Why in 2017; like the book, it focused on Hannah Baker’s suicide and the cassette tapes she left behind for classmates to listen to – the 13 reasons why she ended her life. #13reasonswhy
The original release of the first season stirred up controversial issues surrounded by the stigma of depression and suicide.

If that is the gratitude of the African male, I would hate to experience his ungratefulness. #DirectProvision irishexaminer.com/breakingnews/i…
Mfaco couldn’t apply for asylum on arrival as he’d signed an agreement that he would study here.
Then remembered someone threw a stone at him in 2004 & a security guard in a Cape Town mall "made nasty comments about my appearance. It was very frightening.”
irishtimes.com/life-and-style…
As an example of how "awful" DP is, he relates story from Knockalisheen DP in Clare. Mfaco revealed he was gay to his Albanian roommate who "went on about how boys are supposed to be with girls and all I could think was ‘what have I done to deserve this?’”

Some of you have never lived through hurricane season and it shows.
Let's have a little chat about surviving disasters, city curfews, and lock downs like this... I'm seeing a lot of worry and - hey! guess what? - I used to teach emergency preparedness at the county level!

#Prep
First of all, if you're just making a disaster plan now, you're over 6 months too late. The first thing you should do when moving to a new area or home is familiarize yourself with the natural disasters your area is prone to.

I'm going to expand on this a little. Note, I don't really want to tell you how to vote, but I do think people should carefully consider the impact of their choices, and issues like PrEP and HIV treatment are very important.
If you followed the campaigning for access to #PrEP in the UK, you'll remember there were many vocal people against it (even amongst the gay community).

Their argument, essentially, why should the NHS pay for gay men to have unprotected sex.
That's a gross simplification, but it's what many people feel: "they should just use condoms, not expect free drugs," even despite years of "just use a condom" messages clearly not stopping the spread of HIV.
Now, what happens if the cost of PrEP were to go up after a trade deal?

#PrEP THREAD! After purposely delaying Descovy's development for a decade, @GileadSciences started warning doctors and people with HIV to switch from Truvada-based regimens to Descovy-based regimens, claiming it was safer. 80% switched within 3 years. /1
NOT COINCIDENTALLY, this extended Gilead's monopolies in HIV treatment & prevention since TDF, the main component of Truvada, lost patent protection in 2017. But it also switched patients from a drug used for 14yrs w/ well-documented toxicities to one that was newly approved. /2
Just like Truvada, we're learning more about Descovy after wider use in HIV+ patients. In the 2018 EMERALD Study, TAF, the main component in Descovy, caused far more grade 3/4 elevations in LDL & Total cholesterol. And unlike TDF, it caused diabetes in some patients. /3

California has made a lot of bold, progressive moves in the last two weeks -- working to defend our values against the Trump administration, make our state more affordable, and building a state that represents everyone who lives here. Here are a few highlights...
CA has abolished the use of private, for-profit prisons and immigration detention facilities. The multi-billion dollar industry turning a profit off of incarcerated people will come to an end. time.com/5698905/califo…
CA will now allow all Californians to give back by serving on boards and commissions, regardless of their immigration status.

#AmazingGrady, Day 10

Me: "Hey there. Just came back to check on you."
Him: "Lawd. Did you come back to bug me about that pill some more?"
Me: "You mean the PrEP? Nah. Well. I mean, I do want you to take it. But I legit came to check on you."
Him: "Mmmm hmmmm."

*laughter*
2/
Him: "You a dog on a bone, you know that?"
Me: "Me?"
Him: "Yeah, YOU. But for real. . .I'm pretty low key. I don't need that pill. I ain't out like that, feel me?"

*silence*

Him: "What?"
Me: *shrugs*
Him: "Why you so pressed for me to take this pill?"
3/
Me: "Because. I care about you."

*silence*

Me: "So--tell me again why you aren't feeling it?"
Him: "I don't want nobody experimenting on me. Or using me to get paid."
Me: " Tell me what you mean by that."
Him: "Look. I ain't even out like that. So I'm good." *turns up TV*

Welcome to my first tweetorial!
A patient comes in with an STI or asks for #PrEP. You test for #hiv, #hbv (vaccinate prn), round out the sti testing and get a BMP. Talk (safer) sex for a bit. You give them TDF/FTC #30 x2 refills (and unlimited condoms). Follow up in 3 months

Thanks for coming!

1/13 A group called “AIDS Healthcare Foundation” - a pariah among #HIV advocates - is a chain pharmacy & insurance company masquerading as a nonprofit.

AHF opposes #PrEP, funds anti-housing NIMBY groups, & uses HIV healthcare funds for politics.

AHF has zero credibility.
2/13 AHF & its bully CEO Michael Weinstein are obsessed with abusing HIV healthcare funds to attack me. They first went after me when, as an SF Supervisor, I stopped them from scamming SF chain store rules to open a pharmacy: suing me & dumping big $ against me in my Senate race.
3/13 AHF/Weinstein are now going after me again, b/c of my housing work. They hired an investigator (thru their anti-housing front group “Housing Is a Human Right”) to dig up dirt & slander me. They’re running TV ads & sending out mailers attacking me for #SB50, #MoreHOMES Act.

Guess who's going on their second date tonight...
Second dates.. what subjects do you explore?. I think it's a good time to bring up the subject of #PrEP. 1. It lets the person know that I care about sexual health. 2. If they say something like, "#PrEP is for sluts" (I've heard that) I'll ask them why they believe that.
Imagine if you were talking to someone and you mentioned that you are taking the contraceptive pill and their response was, "the pill is for people that don't want to use condoms and be promiscuous" - Sometimes people make judgements about your moral character because of a pill.

Good Morning. I'm guessing we all want to enjoy good sex? So today, I want to share with you the many ways that you can minimise negative outcomes that can happen when people have sex -
First of all, I think we should acknowledge that in Ireland, our historical and cultural attitudes towards sex and sexual health have not been always healthy ones. I think many of us experienced shame and judgement for wanting intimacy and desire.
Let's look at having agency over your own body, the right to choose a sexual health strategy that works for you. There's no 'one size fits all' when it comes to looking after your sexual health, each person is different.

I want to tell you about an amazing piece of theatre I saw last year. It's called #Rapids - written by @SeanieLove presented by @TalkShopTheatre - The piece explores instances of disclosure and the presence of stigma in the lives of men and women who are living with #HIV
The good news is that #Rapids is coming back in 2019 - RAPIDS National Tour kicks off Feb 2019 Venues BOOKING NOW @Droicheadarts @EverymanCork @projectarts @LimeTreeTheatre and more to be announced soon. #RapidsTour - It's a must see.
I was honored to be asked by @SeanieLove & @TalkShopTheatre to create the graphics for the poster. I got @hazelcoonagh to do the photography (cos she's amazing) - We photographed people who had fabric blowing over the faces, the idea that something is hidden.

I want to share something personal with you. It's important to tell you, because it motivated me to have more compassion for people living with #HIV, pushed me to test regularly and to get involved with #ACTUP - It started with a mistake..
A few years ago, after a stable relationship had finished. I was feeling quite low. I went out with friends and tried to have fun. I got chatting to someone over a few drinks and before we knew it, we were back at my place. I wanted intimacy and passion back in my life
Generally, my prevention method has been to use condoms, but we got carried away. I didn't say anything about using a condom and neither did they. Next morning, mid-hangover the fear started to creep over me. Had I put myself at risk of getting #HIV?

I have access to Truvada — #PrEP, a pill that dramatically reduces the risk of HIV transmission — through my health insurance, and I am grateful to have that, and the regular STI testing that my health care provider does as part of it, available to me.
Because Truvada is such an expensive drug, though, many do not have access to it. Still others lack health care providers with the knowledge or supportive practice to recommend it. (Read more about the costs and an effort to fight them: slate.com/human-interest…)
I’m talking about my use of PrEP to encourage openness about sexual health — and also to encourage people to learn about PrEP if you’re a sexually active queer person or otherwise at heightened risk for HIV. (This education is needed; read this: buzzfeed.com/dominicholden/…)
