For academics, this is a troubling case with a good outcome. McAdams behaved unprofessionally toward a grad student. But a conservative plaintiff made it more likely for the WI Supreme Court to champion academic freedom.
A less charitable interpretation of the decision is that it is intended to be a beachead in a battle against what the Justices's assume is the dominant academic culture
Look, I'm no lawyer, but pretty sure that Fox News caricatures of organizational culture is not a recognized legal standard 
In the McAdams case, some pretty clear indications that some of the Justices are motivated by the "free speech under attack by snowflake students" framing of campus politics
