Well, either
a) he wasn't upto the job which begs the question why was he left in charge for so long.
b) he was upto it in which case his points for resigning were valid and this is just smearing.
... whichever way you look, this sort of briefing does the Gov no good ->
Oh dear, "blindsided by the policy" - bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-pol… ... Marginalising a dept responsible for a particular area of Gov is very "If the right people don't have power, the wrong people get it - politicians, counsellors, ordinary voters" -
Well, from the outside, it certainly seems to be unraveling now ... Boris Johnson quits - channel4.com/news/by/gary-g…
So, the Gov pushed for a "soft" Brexit, several ministers resigned and members are threatening to tear up their cards ... should make the next few days interesting. The usual suspects are out trying to badger @jeremycorbyn to change course ... fortunately, he has stood firm.
The one good sign for @theresa_may is that in such a divided environment when both sides of the divide are complaining then you're probably doing a fair job.
X : Is the Chequers deal that bad?
Me : Well, from the statement - gov.uk/government/pub… - no. But the devil is always in the detail / whitepaper / subsequent negotiation. I happen to prefer a WTO + docking to EFTA route - rpieurope.org/Publications/E… ... but it's not bad.
... negotiation usually has an element of compromise both with external and internal parties. Of course, the imagery of multiple ministers resigning and briefing / counter briefings doesn't exactly instil confidence. But people should let the dust settle first.
