Wow, @rodrikdani talking about trade on The Ezra Klein Show!

A long-standing world leading trade economist and independent thinker on these issues. One of the economists whose research inspired me to go into econ.

I remember as an undergrad, sitting in the library of @IHEID in Geneva (which at the time was in the basement of the World Trade Organization @wto), and reading a report by him that said:
"Yes, it's true that in principle, economic winners of trade liberalization could compensate those who lose out, so that everybody wins. But we need to acknowledge the fact that in the US, in practice, this almost never happens."

And my excitement to study econ was restored :)

At baseline, learning in Liberian schools was extremely low. Even after 6 years of schooling, less than 20% were able to read (compared to over 90% in Burundi).
Students in the treatment group were learning about 60% more per year than those in the control group.

I've avoided it, but here goes: I think reformocons are making a giant mistake if they start pooh-poohing the pursuit of higher GDP and overstating the extent to which Trumpism is driven by economic anxiety. /1

I care as much abt people having good jobs as the next person, but we should also remember that a lot of work isn't especially fulfilling. It's still the case that most ppl work to live, not reverse
