It all started one lazy #Sunday afternoon in a small town near Vancouver Canada

Two #SchoolGoingFriends had a crazy idea
They rounded up three goats from the neighborhood and painted numbers 1,2 & 4 on their sides.
That night they let the goats loose
inside their school building.
The next morning, when the authorities entered the school, they could smell something was wrong.
They soon saw goat droppings
on the stairs and near the entrance
and realized that some goats had
entered the building
A search was immediately launched
and very soon, the three goats were found
But the authorities were worried,
where was goat 3?

So, I want to talk about @hopeconf.

The conference was extraordinary: inspiring, incredibly technically rigorous and immensely joyful.

It was also flawed in its organization and execution, and those weaknesses were exploited by some utter shitheads.
I'm going to try and pick it apart a little bit, at least from my immediate perspective and direct observations. I am not someone who is deeply embedded in this scene (though I've been peripheral since I was 13), and I am for sure willing to be wrong about most of it. #hopeconf
For the entire 3 days of the conference I was deeply impressed by the fact that I was in the midst of a space and a community that was trying, genuinely to do better and be better. #hopeconf

I was a speaker and workshop organizer at #hopeconf this year. My first 2600 meeting was over 20 years ago. I'm also an event organizer with hundreds of events/concerts/festivals under my belt. I'm also an anti-racist who has been shitkicked by nazis. Here's my (too long) take.
#hopeconf had multiple sessions about the alt-right and weaponized trolling, including technical/ethnographic research tracking financial transactions, data connections between racist groups, exposing how poor their OPSEC is. If you're a fascist, the HOPE schedule is DANGEROUS.
Even before this, HOPE and 2600 had been coming under increasing fire for being too 'SJW'. This year's program was the most SJW of all -- not just the alt-right talks, but sessions about the rights of sex workers, and nuanced discussions of consent and the harassment of women.

Sunday afternoon. I spent the midday out mowing dirt, dead grass, and weeds. The things I like least grow the best in weather like this.
It's filthy. G wears a bandanna mask like a TV cowboy when she mows, but I'm claustrophobic.
I've been thinking about America. A thread.
2. Everybody knows where we are. I'm not going to talk about that.
Nobody knows how to get out of it, not for sure, but we've got a bunch of ideas. Just for now I'm not going to talk about that either.
Assuming we do get out of it - what then?
3. I'd say that America has been drifting along on one steady path since Reagan. The rich steadily get richer, it's really an old blues song, the middle slides slowly downward, and the poor sleep under bridges.
