Some white leftists are still completely out of touch with how deeply this administration is harming migrant/immigrant/undoc communities. If you’re still railing about how “Hillary would be just as bad” you really don’t know how bad it is. You’re insulated in a white bubble.
You’re also stuck in 2 years ago. Got any analysis of our *current* situation? Thoughts about upcoming elections? How about critique of the system as a whole? If your paradigm hasn’t become more nuanced in the last 2 yrs, if ur parroting the same bs now as then, u have work 2 do.
There’s not a white person in this country who gets to rest on our laurels, who has figured out the “correct” perspective and gets to just hammer it home repetitively for years. We have to constantly develop more nuance, center POC scholars and activists, push harder through bias
Like I don’t care how socialist or anarchist you are; if your critiques only center whiteness, you aren’t progressive and you aren’t affecting positive change. You’re spinning your wheels. You’re maintaining your brand.
I try to follow accounts who challenge me and push my thinking, ppl maybe more radical than me? But the steady stream of “but Obama” from the far left is starting to make me suspicious. It’s not contributing anything new, at the least.
Countering abolitionists with “ICE was just as bad under Obama” or “Hillary would have bombed ppl too” is just that: trying to shut down abolitionists. It’s the “all lives matter” of political discussion. Trump is doing these things now. Why aren’t you speaking out against him?
I can’t believe I actually have to write this out for anyone who claims to be far left, but: no 2016 candidate would have been “just as bad” as this. Puerto Rico would be better off rn with any of the other candidates. Hate groups would be smaller. The baby prisons wouldn’t exist
The 11,000 refugee children ripped from their parents wouldn’t be kidnapping victims rn. Heather Heyer would still be alive. The PDX stabbing— the sharp increase in hate crimes in the last 2 years. The DREAMers, DACA.
Every immigrant child in this country wouldn’t be coping with a sudden increase of crippling anxiety, the feeling of a target now always on their backs, unable to focus on school. Afraid now to hope for things like college. Afraid of losing their parents.
Afraid they are now the Least Desirable in our society. Trump has caused irreparable harm to them. And all their caregivers have to spend their time mitigating that instead of helping them move forward. Every activist is now caught up in resisting instead of progressing.
Every activist, community leader, community builder, helper, teacher, etc. that I know has spent the last 2-3 years fighting against the damage being wrought specifically by Trump instead of the meaningful work they were doing before. Our work has been derailed by triage.
My transgender and gay friends carry new, Trump-branded anxieties they wouldn’t be coping with rn with Hillary in office. Same for every woman terrified of losing Roe, same for everyone worried about the current climate crisis. She’d do better by it.
And we’d all be living without coping from the anxiety of those late night tweets @ foreign governments. Or football players. Jesus so much of our collective energy would be freed up to do progressive work without all this anxiety.
And this is the part where “leftists” say no one was doing that work, and all it tells me is that YOU weren’t. Bc if you’d been out here doing community work all along, you’d have seen all the other helpers out here doing it with you. So you’re just projecting.
“MSM” might not have seen that work, so then go yell at CNN. Don’t fucking @ me about how no one cared before Trump. That’s erasure. You’re blind to the work of activists, scholars, organizers, teachers, writers, and communities that was going on long before Trump’s takeover.
Honestly if you’re still whinging on about Bernie or Hillary rn, I suspect u might be doing pro-Trump propaganda on purpose. It feels like deflecting from critique of this admin. It serves no other purpose at this juncture.
And if u can’t see that either of them in office would be causing less harm than Trump, if you can’t see this from a harm reduction perspective, then I don’t think you’re centering those most vulnerable to harm by him.
There’s a word for centering whiteness over POC. It’s “racism.” You’re doing a racism by not centering their lives rn. You’re doing the work of fascism, arguing over party politics instead of working to mitigate harm.
And if Clinton were in office rn, would u be tweeting every day ad nauseam about how Trump would have been just as bad? Would u beat that horse to death as well? THE HORSE IS DEAD.
Anyways, I really think y’all are out of touch with the ppl here on the ground most harmed by Trump, and the helpers being waylaid by him. Maybe this admin gives u new purpose, maybe marching against fascists gives u life, but the rest of us had better work to do.
Clinton wouldn’t have been progress or change, but she wouldn’t have hindered our movement like this. The real work of America is not done through national politics, but locally, in communty building. Are you in touch with local movements in your town? Get out of ur bubble.
Try actually doing something to make life better for ppl where u live. You’ll be amazed at how many ppl are doing this work, too.
