Just a reminder that with the 20th Century Fox/Disney merger we're going to be getting ~30-50 fewer theatrical movies per year.

But, hey, X-Men in Avengers 5, right?!
Sorry, that high end is a little too high, but Fox, between 20th Century, Searchlight, and International released 28 movies in 2017 while Disney released 8 through Buena Vista (Disney, Pixar, Marvel) and 0 through Touchstone.
Yeah, for the last decade Touchstone has released an average of 0.5 films per year.

I guess what I'm saying is I hope you're not a fan of R rated movies.
Sure, Focus (Universal) can pick up a bit of what Searchlight has done, but they don't really have an incentive to double their output, especially now that mid-slate prestige films have one fewer outlet to use.

Artists just lost a truckload of negotiating power.
Focus and Sony Classic aren't going to ramp up, they're just going to take the best of what Searchlight would have taken. The films at the bottom of the slate, made by people who aren't named Coppola or Anderson, just won't get made.
For people asking about exhibitors, if this creates openings for other companies to get their movies into theatres, Disney's goal is explicitly fewer movies in theatres.
Fewer movies in theatres means the big movies hang around for longer, and Disney has already exhibited a *brazen* willingness to bully exhibitors.

Sure, a smaller player *might* take advantage of this situation, but this is a bad way to find out.
Buena Vista already has 46%(!!!!) of the theatrical market, and they just executed a competing 10%.
Dear every sarcastic dick nugget saying "oh boo hoo, a few less movies per year"

you don't get to complain about reboots, remakes, and sequels because whenever the industry tightens like this it's the weird breakout risky movies that get cut first.
It's not the Terminator: Salvation that get cut, it's the Reservoir Dogs, Pi, Bound, and Bottle Rocket that get cut.
