Just voted to extend National Flood Insurance Program for 4 months. Don't get me wrong - I'm relieved. If it lapsed, thousands of NJans would lose coverage just as hurricane season begins.

But we really need reform - my #SafeNFIP Act has bipartisan support. It could have passed
NJans deserve a flood insurance program that works.
My #SafeNFIP Act:
-makes premiums more affordable
-reduces future flooding by investing in resiliency
-holds insurance companies accountable
-provides a long-term reauthorization.
We can't afford to wait until November for the National Flood Insurance Program to be reformed. Not when we have a bipartisan bill ready to go - with 4 Republicans and 5 Democrats co-sponsoring, this bill is a no-brainer.
NJans know how crucial it is to have a flood insurance program that works. It’s time for Republican leadership to take up our bill and fix this program so it’s sustainable for taxpayers, affordable for policyholders, and fair and efficient for everyone.

Yes, it's more intense storms and rising ocean levels and increasing heat. But it's *way* more than that. So I made a list of what’s to come, according to the report. Warning: It's very, very long. Here we go:
- worse milk quality
- more heat exhaustion, heat-stroke and heart attacks
- reduced harvests of shellfish
- shortened downhill and cross-country ski seasons
- more stress on bridge integrity
- increased US international development assistance programs costs

1. Why do we keep building/rebuilding in flood zones? Because government-subsidized flood insurance (National Flood Insurance Program) offers consumers in coastal danger zones below-market protection from floods, essentially eliminating financial risk of living in such areas.
2. By offering cheap flood insurance, government made it attractive to build in danger zones: Population has grown by 165% in coastal Florida counties, by 127% in South Carolina, and DOUBLED in coastal areas of North Carolina and Texas - all states impacted by a major hurricane.
3. Even before Hurricane Harvey last year, the National Flood Insurance program owed Uncle Sam $25 billion. It hasn’t even paid off the loans from Hurricane Katrina — and that was 13 years ago. Taxpayers are going to be cutting yet another giant check to cover damages this year.
