Thread: Asking others besides Allaah
In a widely referenced hadith in Sunan At-Tirmidhi, the Prophet ﷺ said to Abul Abbas Abdullah ibn Abbas (RA) that

إذا سألت فا سأل الله
"If you ask, ask Allaah"
The scholars dissected the Arabic word used in the hadith and said it means 'to beg' however some said asking as it relates to the statement above is supplications (dua).
Allaah Exalted be He, has ordered His servants to ask from Him. He says: "And ask of Allaah of His bounty." Qur'an 4:32
What is pertinent here is for the Muslim to come to the realisation that none besides Allaah can truly grant his or her needs.
Yes, this can be granted by Allaah through other humans but the big issue here as it relates to Tauheed is for the Muslim to realize that truly it was Allaah who fulfilled his needs.
Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali in Jaami' explained that it is not only consistent with the Shareeah but also with rational thinking that one should only ask of Allaah and should not ask of anyone else.
What is involved here is that one must degrade himself in front of the one he's begging of and to that to a fellow human, who is not more than an equal to the person is unacceptable.
Imam Ahmad used to say:

اللهم كما صنت وجهي عن السجود لغيرك فصنه عن المسألة لغيرك

"O Allaah, in the same way that you have kept my face from prostrating to other than You, protect me from asking of anyone other than You."
Asking from others is of two types, one type is completed forbidden and that's the type that leads to shirk or that's shirk in itself....while the second one it is allowed but still best not to ask anyone.
The type of asking that is forbidden is to ask of another human what is typically not within the ability of human being. This can be a type of shirk...e.g asking others about things related to Ghaib "unseen" such as asking about future occurrence. This includes calling on Saints
Also, for married couples to go to a so called malam asking of him to grant them children if they have none or asking of them to make them have certain things they aspire for. This is shirk
Also, of this category is for someone to go to another human thinking that he can enrich or heal. And asking of such human to enrich to heal him or her. This is shirk because only Allaah can enrich and heal.
Also, young men and women going to such devils in the guise of "malams" asking of them to put their love in the heart of so-and-so. This also leads to shirk
Allaah Exalted be He says: "And who is more astray than one who invokes other than Allaah, such as will not answer him till the Day of Resurrection and who are (even) unaware of their prayers to them." Q46:5
The permissible asking is where people ask of each other what is normally within the ability of a human being. A kind of mutual assistance and help.
Scholars cautioned that even when turning to humans for this permissible type, one should realize that the request will only be satisfied by them if Allaah guides them to that decision. Everything is in the Hands of Allaah.
You might know the President but wallaah if Allaah has not granted your request or given the President the ability, you will not have your request granted by him even if you sleep under the same roof. In essence, we ask of Allaah at all times.
Scholars said included in this permissible asking of others is begging or soliciting financial assistance from others. However, this also has been disapproved except in the case of necessity.
The Prophet ﷺ said: "It is better for one of you to bring a load of firewood on his back and sell it, than to ask of another who might give him or refuse to give him." Sahih Muslim. This hadith alone flushes down the drain #almajiri system
What is surprising is that you see young men and women supposedly educated and exposed going to Bokas or "malams" to make others fall in love with them or to separate two lovers. This is shirk.
We must take care of our Iman, we must be mindful of our duties to Allaah lest our regrets become irreversible. How can you ask another human things only Allaah can grant...e.g marriage, children, wealth, health....
