It's been ridiculously hot this week and the trains between Gouda and Rotterdam have not been running due to maintenance work, so I've been cycling the 25km to work. Here are some pictures.
Let's go. First a little ride into the village. The road is narrow with passing places but at this time of the morning and during school holidays, I have it to myself.
Into the village and up to the church square. Just the local minibus is about. It's green bin day so everyone's garden waste is out on the street.
Turning right we're on the road out of the village and back onto a single track road.
After a kilometre and a half were at the edge of the Loetbos, a local forest with trails and a cafe. But we're turning right away from the forest and onto the cycleway that takes us across the fields towards the river and the dyke.
But before we get that far we're turning again, this time onto the Tiendweg, a small farm road that leads to the next village but which is a no through road to motor traffic.
At the end we cross the road the leads from the main provincial road into the village and continue straight on towards the town. Again the road is restricted for motor vehicles.
Finally we make it to civilisation. Turning right onto the local access road, we now have to cross the sprawl of housing to get the other side of town where we can cross the river.
At the roundabout we turn left onto the distributor road. There are about for roundabouts along here all with priority for cyclists and pedestrians. In between it is a mixture of local access roads, unidirectional and bidirectional cycleways.
On the distributor road there are bus stops to take people to the metro. Our cycleway goes behind the stops of course.
At the end of the road we reach the provincial road. We pass underneath it and turn right onto an access road that leads to the bridge.
Up and over the bridge.
Down the other side and again we are traveling through a residential area on a distributor road with roundabouts. These have recently been changed to give bikes priority, but the angles haven't been changed just the paint, so they're not perfect.
Then underneath the provincial road again and we've at the metro station. But I'm not stopping here, it's only another 5km to the city centre, so on we go.
We turn left and go through a business area between the metro and the main road.
We reach another main road which we cross, this time at a set of traffic lights. Then down a little hill into the area of Kralingen.
Kralingen has a long shopping street with bars and cafes spilling out onto the pavement.
Finally we're into the city downtown proper.
And then to the office bike parking in the basement.
