What do these two columns have in common? Incredible reporting. And actually BEING there. That's why I love both @AbcarianLAT as well as @LATstevelopez. They aren't columnizing from a desk. They are out in the city talking to people.
I also love @AbcarianLAT because when I had the flu earlier this year, she drove from Venice to my house in Los Feliz to bring me Ginger Ale, ice cream and chicken soup. Oh and her columns are great too.

The only thing Adam loved more than his family and politics was baseball. He took me to one of my first games--an exhibition game at RFK Stadium btw the Expos and Cardinals (his fav team). He was a huge proponent of DC getting a team.

A spot of good news...the Carla and Lawrence McCue, whose struggle to find a permanent housing solution I profiled, got a home. I was there on Thursday when they got the keys.
This is a happy ending, but as Pat Cohen who runs Safe Parking LA and has been helping the couple, reminded me when we spoke: there are many more like them. Here is Lawrence signing the lease. He purchased those shoes for this special occasion.

Here is the story of how Paradise burned.

Kavanaugh has a credibility problem and a Kozinski problem. @danepps’s comments are roughly consistent with what we heard in 1999 as law students.
As a 2L, I was told that women “don’t apply” to clerk for Judge Kozinski. It is not credible that Kavanaugh didn’t know something. 1/
2/ Kavanaugh said he was “shocked” by the Kozinski harassment allegations, a “gut punch.”
Incredible.
Because it was a badly kept secret among Yale Law students in the late 90s that Kozinski had some kind of problem with women. amp.slate.com/news-and-polit…
3/ I was a 2L when Judge Kozinski was a guest speaker in one of our classes. He was a big name, a feeder judge for SCOTUS, and so Yale 2Ls were psyched. He was smart, funny, charming.

2/ I think her one wild & precious life is lost in the constellation of competing interests/platforms/brands that controls the narrative(s) of the American barnyard. Imprisoned and denied the right to tell her story or hug her mother for over a year, she's been disappeared.
3/ Our risk aversion equals her crushed spirit. I wonder if her involvement in our gov't's drone program renders her a human being indefinitely consigned to dwell outside the sphere of what we're willing to know about ourselves. Not unlike soldier suicides. #PolicyIsLiturgy

A thread about veterans. This has been bothering me for a while, so here we go. I’ll probably get shunned for this, but I have to speak the truth.
I’m a veteran. Many of you know that. Since I served during the Vietnam era, I know what it’s like to be shunned. So, when I see people welcoming vets home from war, it warms my heart and makes me proud to be an American.
But, there is a danger in honoring vets. We’re not all good people. While the vast majority of vets are honorable people, like every other group we have our bad apples. There are men who served in the Navy during Vietnam that are trying to get benefits for Agent Orange.
