I'm on a boat heading from Marina Del Rey to Malibu. #WoosleyFire
Heading to Malibu on the Leight Star--a 150 ft yacht. Boat is packed with supplies and Malibu residents hoping to help
This is Bill Kerbox, and we're on his friend's yacht. He's explaining to the volunteers many of whom are Malibu residents that we'll be at Paradise Cove in about a hour. #malibuhope
They're bringing small boats that can offload supplies to shore when we get to paradise cove
Here's a view of the charred hills of Malibu
And some photos. #Woolseyfire
The boat belongs to Howard Leight. You can read more about him and his son here. forbes.com/sites/robertad…
Howard told me he spent Friday night saving two of his homes from the blazes including his vineyard-- much of which was burned badly. He knew he needed to get back and help people however he could.
Coming into Paradise Cove.
Surfers are coming out to bring supplies from the boat to the beach.
#Woolseyfire
A Sheriffs deputy is here telling people they can offload supplies but people can't come ashore. "If we're not letting people in by land, we're not letting them in by sea,"he said. People are pissed
He is keeping a close on whether or not people are getting in and off the boat
One of these guys said it was the third boat they offloaded
Here is the Sheriffs boat intercepting two people trying to go ashore. Over the load speaker he said: "really you're trying to go on shore. I already told you not to."
That's Leo Harrington. He told me he is a Pt. Dume resident and has already unloaded three boats today. #Woolseyfire
They're stuffing trash bags with dry goods. Some diapers were lost to sea moments ago. Now they're double bagging and tying them off. #wooleyfire
They're sending bikes ashore but one of them has flat tires. Hope someone has a pump!
This is Howard. It's his boat. He's been pretty jazzed about this whole ordeal. Really happy to help. He said he's lived in Malibu 50 years. His boat has a hot tub and a helipad.
Alright the bougiest bucket brigade imaginable has ended. People are celebrating with beers and Rose from the full stocked bar.
This woman who was scolded by the Sheriff earlier was finally able to escape. #WhoolseyFire
Malibu native and Buzzfeed reporter extraordinaire @bri_sacks captures what this effort looked like from the beach.
@jaylclendenin has been with me this whole time and is just getting a signal LOL
Here was @jaylclendenin soaked with his @latguild pin trying to get the shot!
Back to port
That is all from the "Leight Star!" Good night and good luck.
Here’s a short blog about the day @jaylclendenin and I had. I think imma say more in the Essential California newsletter. So sign up for that and look for it in your inbox tomorrow. latimes.com/projects/la-nl… latimes.com/local/lanow/la…
