#MondayMotivation
I recently published a thread looking at #LeaveLies. Not surprisingly, I got responses that "both sides lied". After a bit of to & fro, @Jamiepembs kindly sent me some links which demonstrated #RemainLies
1/18
The 1st link was, on the surface, a little disappointing. It appeared to just make the assertion that "Campaigners on both sides of the EU Referendum made false claims" with no evidence of either #RemainLies or #LeaveLies
2/18
If you look carefully in that page, you'll see a link to a comparison of the Vote Leave & Stronger In leaflets. The 1st thing I noted was that the Leave list was longer, but I'm here to look into #RemainLies. This is an image, but the individual links are included below 3/18
The 1st link is about business.
fullfact.org/europe/stronge…
"Over 200,000 UK businesses trade with the EU, helping them create jobs here in the UK."
I don't see a false claim here, but perhaps @Jamiepembs could explain 4/18
The 2nd is on jobs.
"Over 3 million UK jobs are linked to our exports to the EU - that’s one in every ten UK jobs."
fullfact.org/europe/stronge…
Still trying to find evidence of #RemainLies 5/18
Next up is investment.
"The UK gets £66 million of investment every day from EU countries - that’s more than we pay to be a member of the EU."
fullfact.org/europe/stronge…
Ok .. something here, but it appears to be just careful selection of statistics rather than #RemainLies 6/18
Next is the cost to each household. No, not £4300 (that was GDP)
"Leaving the EU would cost the average UK household at least £850 a year, and potentially as much as £1,700, according to research released by the London School of Economics."
fullfact.org/europe/stronge… 7/18
If you're interested in the actual research, you can find it here.
I am still struggling to find any evidence of #RemainLies
cep.lse.ac.uk/pubs/download/… 8/18
The last of these links is on prices
"Being in Europe means lower prices in UK shops, saving the average UK household over £350 a year. If we left Europe, your weekly shop could cost more."
fullfact.org/europe/stronge… 9/18
So that 1st link that Jamie sent me, with examples of #RemainLies didn't prove fruitful. The worst that I could see was the 10yr avg of inward EU investment is greater than it was in 2014. Still, press on, maintain that #MondayMotivation - other links to look at 10/18
Next he sent me a link on Immigration
Which just said that while Leave lied about immigration, Remain failed to explain the benefits. Not a good example of #RemainLies
11/18
The next link that Jamie sent me was about Mandelson, & nothing to do with #RemainLies (the article was about things said by Mandelson about the Leave campaign AFTER the ref). I could discuss this, but it's not relevant.
12/18
Next was a link to a blog by someone who disagreed with the economic forecasts but appears to understand nothing about tariffs or trade barriers. Certainly no evidence of #RemainLies 13/18
I can understand someone disagreeing with a forecast, & even producing their own forecasts, but to point to a forecast & claim it's a lie purely because it's looking into the future seems bizarre to me.
Still ... #MondayMotivation still driving me on to the next #RemainLies 14/18
The next was just another attack on Osborne & his forecasts. I clicked on the link, despite it being the Express, but there's nothing in there, so don't feel you need to open it
15/18
The final link (if I've missed some @Jamiepembs, please point them out) was to Neil "savaging" @JamesMcGrory about something that Open Britain produced AFTER the ref. It says "savaging", but "talking over" works too.
16/18
Ok, so my #MondayMotivation is wearing thin. I've persevered. @Jamiepembs obviously believes that there were #RemainLies during the referendum campaign, but nothing he's provided as examples actually ARE examples 17/18
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that there were no #RemainLies - just that I've not seen any, & evidence from someone who ardently believes there were just doesn't show anything of the kind.
On the other hand, there is CLEAR evidence that #VoteLeaveLied & so did Leave-EU /end
