As technologists, the seemingly innocuous decisions we make in our products end up influencing the way people behave, their relationships with others, the knowledge and viewpoints they get exposed to... Technology is never neutral. That's why awareness of ethics is so essential.
In AI-driven products, the goals your algorithms are optimizing for are a critical element of the UX of your product. Over time, these objectives end up *defining* the product. It at all possible, these goals should be made configurable by the users they affect.
Algorithmic decisions end up programming... people. It is increasingly time to reverse that trend -- let technology be a tool in the hands of end users, let not users become tools to be manipulated by technology.
