People will swarm you with all sorts of complicated career advice.

Here's the only thing you need to WIN at any job.

It's so simple, you don't even have to be smaht or skilled.
First 3-6 months on the job make sure you show up early, often & for everything.

Volunteer to do extra work, participate in annoying groups activities, stay after hours, come early.

That's it. Next 5 years you can be coasting, shopping for a better gig. With stellar references.
I have done this at every job I've held and it's worked every single time. Usually, it's a done deal in just a few weeks.

Once you have the reputation of a high performer and the important people LIKE YOU, nothing else matters.
Let's break this down for those of you with less experience.

1. You don't have to be effective, as much as show enthusiasm, don't break things and don't piss people off. Always be pleasant.
2. Don't wait for an invitation to ask for more work. Show up early and leave late regardless, and make sure relevant people see you. Do this consistently.

3. Screw casual Fridays. You show up and work the entire day - unless there's a specific office function to attend.
4. Remember that what's important is to appear working. If you're at a dysfunctional company where they just don't give you anything to do, work on your own stuff. Build skills or do moonlighting work. Use your brain and appear enthused and effective.
5. Make sure all your coworkers know you and be polite and helpful with everyone. Offer to help when appropriate but don't intrude and do NOT give unsolicited advice.

6. Don't interrupt people or spend a lot of work time chatting. You're busy, remember?
CAUTION: This is not an invitation to waste your time. Even if there's no value in your job, use the time wisely.

Build skills, grind at your own side business, take time off to travel, whatever flies your kite. Be deliberate about it and work towards what's next.
You want to know the good, the bad and the ugly about careers and business?

I won't spare any of it.
