See, eg, conservativehome.com/parliament/201…. If @MissVHewson can manage plausibly to interpret the passage promising that we will stay in “a free trade zone stretching from 🇮🇸 [EEA] to 🇹🇷 [CU]” as a “very clear” promise to leave the SM and CU, she’s quite some lawyer.
The truth is that neither referendum campaign was conspicuous for coherence, clear explanation of the key relevant concepts (eg “single market” or “customs union”), or honest analysis of the trade offs.
Suggesting that we now decide policy by examining the entrails of the referendum campaigns is about as sensible as the Roman practice of deciding battle strategy by looking at real entrails. /ends

Unexplored areas of the U.K. constitution: government control over the Commons timetable and if and how it can be circumvented.
Unexplored because the question is usually theoretical: the Government either commands the House, or it is brought down. A Government that doesn’t command the House but isn’t being brought down is a major constitutional novelty.
Also unexplored because there is no case law on it (the courts can’t get involved) and most of the “law” is in standing orders, a text book regarded (unusually in English law) as authoritative (Erskine May), and accumulated wisdom of Commons clerks and Parliamentary Counsel.

Not happy phrasing by @EvanHD.
The interview was disappointing (and as @StevePeers points out there was plenty of good stuff on Twitter with which to knock gaping holes in the 30 “truths”).
I appreciate that time is limited. But trying to get a seasoned operator like Lilley to criticise Gove wasted time.

As said at the front, I helped with the legal aspects of this report.
Like all the choices that the U.K. has in front of it, an EEA/EFTA type arrangement involves trade-offs and political judgment about priorities. Views may fairly differ (and differ profoundly) about those.
Moreover, any way forward is going to be a second- or third- best option for many. It’s no use refusing to look at your second choice option because it’s not your first.

I'm often asked, Where are we on Brexit and where is it likely to go?

The outcome of the process will be dictated by the interaction of the various players and their motivations. /1
To recap, the environment currently consists of a very divided Parliament. The government is propped up by the DUP, there are pro-Brexit MPs on both sides, as well as centrists. The Brexit divide goes across party lines. /2
There is also the EU itself, which is protecting the jewel in it's crown, the Single Market. And finally the WTO, whose rules will be valid in one form or another under any form of Brexit./3

1/11 It now seems there are only two ways to interpret May’s #Brexit strategy.

The first is the Optimistic assumption that she still thinks (logically if not emotionally) ‘Remain’ was the only rational choice when Leave offered no coherent choice.
2/11 Her long forgotten but excellent speech on why she would vote Remain is still our best guide to that line of thinking. conservativehome.com/parliament/201…
3/11 If so, we can take at face value her apparent aim to manoeuvre towards the softest #Brexit possible.

She will deliver a ‘political’ Brexit but not an ‘economic’ one.

1. A thread on #trade and aid.

One of the first tangible benefits of #Brexit I've seen is the emerging reform of @DFID_UK where it is becoming more of an arm of trade policy than a state owned humanitarian NGO. I would like that to go much further and rethink trade.
2. I do not think we should be wasting too much effort on free trade deals largely because they are of questionable value and encourage inefficient value chains. Any work on tariffs should really be reserved for multilateral activity.
3. Instead we need DfID as the spearhead of our trade policy. There is no reason why we cannot pursue humanitarian goals and enhance our trade while we are at it. For a start we can do a lot with medicines and pharmacy products.
