Sigh. So, okay, a few things about Kulture that might surprise you--they sure surprised me.
Kulture describes itself as an "Asian-American Media Watchdog," and they do some good work in boosting Asian-Am representation and calling out instances of anti-Asian sentiment in the media. However, that is unfortunately NOT the whole picture.
While Kulture does good work, it has been supported and owes at least some of its buildup to r/AZNidentity, the same group on Reddit that has organized targeted harassment of many Asian-Am women, including me.
Here's the page where user "arcterex117" talks how the AZNidentity community has invested $ and built Kulture's platform. Reddit post on r/aznidentity, by user arterex117. Key quotes:
Here's another where the same user, "arcterex117," boasts about how the AZNidentity community has "spent the last nine months or so building a presence for Kulture on Twitter." Reddit post on r/aznidentity by user arterex117. Key quotes:
Okay, so who is "arterex117"? He's credited with being one of the founders of r/Aznidentity. He's also been suspended from Reddit, which if you know anything about Reddit's anything-goes atmosphere, says something. post on reddit. Key quote:
And who's mad about him getting suspended? Here are some comments bemoaning his suspension. Note the comments about "cultural genocide" of Asians--by, for example, having multi-racial kids. post on reddit. Key quotes:
So to review: r/Aznidentity organizes targeted harassment of Asian women, especially Asian women with non-Asian partners and/or mixed kids. Its founder--now banned from Reddit--brags about having built up Kulture, and his supporters associate mixed kids as "cultural genocide."
Over the past year, Kulture has been used to encourage people to dogpile--aka carry out coordinated, targeted harassment--on multiple Asian women, mostly those with prominent platforms.
Until earlier this year, I respected Kulture and the work it did promoting Asian representation and calling out anti-Asianness. Then, in March, I saw Kulture being used to dogwhistle followers to harass several Asian Am women who wrote about identity. I was shocked.
I don't know to what extent Kulture and the AZNidentity are aligned. But it is clear that at a minimum, members of the AZNidentity group actively use it to promote their causes.
Many influential Asian Ams--men and women--follow Kulture. r/Aznidentity knows this and uses that fact to give themselves the appearance of legitimacy. Here's a post bragging about how, for example, @johnmchu and @MrEddieHuang have interacted w/ Kulture. post on r/aznidentity. Key quotes:
Later in that same post, user "arterex117" (reputed founder of r/Aznidentity) brags about the tactics they use: harassment. Here he is *bragging* about their harassment of actor @kenjeong. post on r/aznidentity. Key quotes:
""We whacked aroung Ken Jeong until he blocked us."
"...our pinned Tweet that Ken Jeong is an Asian Uncle Tom."
"I won't go into gory detail. But we've had to think out of the box to get the ball rolling."

It doesn't matter if you like Jeong's work or not. This is harassment.
To sum up: Kulture has done some good work for Asian Ams, and many of its followers have as well. But it's also being used--whether it knows or not--by members of a small but vocal group of Asian Ams, based at r/aznidentity, to harass those they don't like. Often, AsAm women.
For those who follow Kulture, esp those influential people they brag about on this page, please be aware of what Kulture is being used for, and ask yourself if you support it. At best, Kulture needs to clean house. reddit.com/r/aznidentity/…

A post from yesterday, rallying those on r/Aznidentity to attack me on Twitter. Note that it encourages users to use the link in the next tweet... reddit.com/r/aznidentity/…
... and suggests tagging in mass groups of users to harass me. (Bonus gratuitous venom against Amy (Tan), Constance (Wu), and Esther (?) at the bottom.) Now, see that note with the arrow? post on r/aznidentity by u/shadowsweep (a moderator). Key quotes:
That link with the arrow leads to this page, r/aznidentity's guidelines for Twitter activism. It explicitly encourages using a fake profile picture of an Asian man, that isn't yours, and mobbing. reddit.com/r/aznidentity/…
This is bullying and harassment. And if you see parallels between what this small but vocal group of men are doing and the tactics of the "alt-right" and white supremacists, you're not wrong.
Maybe that's some random user suggesting these tactics, you might be thinking. Nope. That person who said "Use this URL in the future" and linked to those harassing tactics? He's one of the MODERATORS of r/aznidentity. list of moderators, including
Does this mean that everyone on r/aznidentity is involved in harassment? Not necessarily. But the evidence that one of the main purposes of this group is to facilitate harassment--especially they like to deem "race traitors," like those w/ multiracial kids--is pretty clear.
Final thoughts for now: I've been getting harassed, most often by people affiliated with this group, since EINTY came out in 2014. Many other Asian women have been as well. This is not about me. This is a widespread problem.
I honestly don't care if you like me/my work or who I married, or if you choose to misinterpret an out of context, years-old tweet of mine. You're entitled to your opinion of me (and need not share it with me, I'll add). This is not about ME; it's about widespread harassment.
In the past 24 hours I've heard from about a dozen women who have been harassed similarly; I know there are many more. Some have said they quit blogging, writing, or publishing our of fear after these tweets. That's not okay, and that's why I'm speaking up now.
Last of all: this is NOT all Asian men. Only a small but vocal minority is actively doing the harassment. If you don't do that, I'm not talking about you. Just please, think about whether this is the kind of behavior you want to support, and act accordingly.

It's come to my attention that I broke my own thread, so here's the second half. Sorry. It's been a long day.
