I am utterly horrified when leftists act like capitalism is just going to wither up and die as a natural cycle. That is wholesale fantasy. Unless we do the titanic work of moving toward socialism, capitalism will turn straight into fascism and take us with it.

There is no violent revolution coming.
There is no worldwide general strike coming.

We are here, inside the belly of this beast and it is contingent upon us to use every avenue available to prevent capitalism from utterly consuming all life on Earth.

Violent revolutions and global general strikes seem nice because they make you feel like we will liberate ourselves in some elaborate act of glory. We won't.

This struggle will be trench warfare and we will hemorrhage lives and livelihoods and spend ourselves to the bone.

We are going to have to suffer for this better world for our entire lives. It is going to happen over many decades of protracted and exhausting struggle with escalating, but never completely transformational moments of glory and reprieve. That is what history teaches us.

And I don't make these sorts of threads to get likes and retweets, because I know full well that my echo chamber does not want to hear this. But you all need to.

Stop thinking it will solve itself, stop thinking that a single transformational moment will free you from despair.
