Our nation, like all illegitimate authoritarian institutions in history, relies upon the selective manipulation of contradictory beliefs.

"The left are privileged pansies" vs. "The left are antifa super-soldiers"
"Black people are lazy" vs. "Black people are only good for labor"
This relies upon, as Chomsky calls them "emotionally potent oversimplifications." The propaganda does not focus in on real life justification, it focuses on boiling down complex ideological arguments to emotionally impactful bite-sizes.
Once these contradictory emotionally potent oversimplifications have been conveyed to the public, power structures can manipulate them for every possible event, because they have constructed a negative portrayal for any eventuality.
One will notice that the two sides of this equation are the "the enemy is weak" and "the enemy is strong." Umberto Eco writes about this in his work called "Eternal Fascism." Bold added for emphasis.
Extrapolated further, however, the two sides of the coin are actually "fear" and "resentment." When the vehicles for conveying fear of a select population and resentment at that same population have been established, a de facto platform for fascism is built.
Notice that Marxism of all flavors, is predicated upon the dissolution of this contradictory ideological schema. It rejects the notions that fellow citizens should be feared or resented, promoting solidarity. It re-focuses animosity toward illegitimate power structures.
And so capitalism and fascism stand united against Marxism, with its threat of dissolving the schema by which they maintain power. We, for the sake of our fellow citizens, must be aware of their game and plan wisely as to how we will manipulate it to their downfall.
For the civil rights struggle of the 60s, many people chose MLK, who struck against the side of the coin which said "fear black men and women." Malcolm X chose the opposite, to dismantle the notion that "black men and women are weak." Both are important in dismantling the schema.
With leftism, antifa is the force we have that debunks the binary of "the left is weak enough we can destroy them." Democratic socialists, progressive leftists, etc... are there to debunk the notion of "fear the left because they are inherently brutal."
And you may say "we should choose one!" I disagree. We must dismantle the binary by being adaptive. What we want them to internalize deep down in their lizard brain is this; "the left will cooperate if you give them what they want. If you do not, they will mobilize to take it."
This is especially true in winning the war against conservatives and right-wingers. They have simple minds and their propaganda is simple-minded. They want those nice clean cut categories, even if they are contradictory. When you show them things are nuanced, they are confused.
And when conservatives/right-wingers become confused, they just shut down. Their entire worldview and the entirety of their organizing is predicated upon strict categorization. Without that, they come to a stand-still. A diversity of effective tactics is what will win.
