For me, the most interesting line in Barnier's FAZ article isn't the rejection of Chequers (we knew that) but: "We don't need more time. What we need are political decisions”. So let's have a look at the state of the UK's political decision making:
First up, this marvellous tweet, and the debate on geographical indications (GI). France sells China about 220 million litres of wine a year. Britain sells China less wine than Georgia (fabulous wine btw) and Moldova.
These are the stats for sparkling wine. Also, China recognises the GI Champagne (champagne.fr/en/press-media…) so "excellent English sparkling Champagne" wouldn't really work as a name. In terms of feta, worth keeping in mind that both geography and recipe are central to the debate
Next up, Liam Fox, who over the weekend said: "I don’t believe it’s possible to have a 15-year time horizon on predictions of GDP.” As @henrymance notes, this isn't always the case
Every time Fox talks about Brexit, it's worth remembering that he 1) claimed that a trade deal with the EU would be the easiest in history, and 2) he said the UK would have 40 free trade deals in place 'seconds after' Brexit.
Also on television over the weekend: David Davis, who famously said that the UK would negotiate directly with Berlin, and all would be fine because German carmakers would want to keep selling their cars to the UK
Coincidentally, also over the weekend, German business leaders had this to say (via ft.com/content/ab2ffe…):
And, over the past 48 hours, we've also had a proposal to ditch the withdrawal agreement all together, and go for an interim EEA deal (spoiler: divorce terms need to be sorted out regardless of what the future arrangement is), and a Johnson column where his best line is from July
In summary, with about 3 months left to negotiate an exit deal, UK politics is all over the place, and much of the Brexit debate still clouded by wishful thinking, slogans and little substance
